SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT THROUGH INTERMODALITY Palermo, 18-19 March 2005

WHITE PAPER 2001 TIME TO DECIDE -Transport sector responsible for 28% of emissions of CO 2, the leading greenhouse gas. -In 2010, CO 2 emissions to increase by 50% to 1.113 billion tons. -Road Transport accounts for 84% of CO 2 emissions attributable to transport. -External cost of Road Transport: 5% of GDP of EU (pollution, traffic congestion, accidents)

RODER INVOLVEMENT IN INTERMODAL TRANSPORT: RODER, through its member companies (UN Ro-Ro) is heavily involved in the development and enhancement of short sea shipping in Turkey.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES Last year, through our Ro-Ro companies, we have succeeded the carriage of almost 90.000 vehicles from Turkey to mainly EU countries over the port of Trieste in Italy.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES We are operating vessels in the Med area between the ports of Istanbul (Haydarpaşa and Ambarlı) and Trieste as well as İzmir (Çeşme) and Trieste.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES Currently, our companies own 12 vessels operating in the Med area. The Turkish-Italian Ro-Ro Line is the fastest growing line in the world and currently is being considered as the first line in the Mediterranean sea as well as being the 6th biggest line in the world.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES With the inclusion of 4 more vessels to be delivered during the course of 2005 - 2006, the investment level in Turkey-Italy line will exceed 700 million Euros.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES We are also very much active in the Black Sea region where we operate 3 Ro-Ro vessels between Samsun (Turkey) and Novorossiysk (Russian Federation) as well as a vessel operating between Zonguldak (Turkey) and Evpatoria (Ukraine), through our Black Sea Ro-Ro company.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES DEVELOPMENT OF TURKEY-ITALY RO-RO LINES

RO-RO ACTIVITIES Total number of vehicles carried by Ro-Ro vessels through the port of Haydarpaşa was 12.500 in the year 1993, while this figure has increased to 90.000 in the year 2004.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES Today, 70 % of our transport to Western Europe are realized via Ro-Ro.

RO-RO ACTIVITIES Only in the year of 2004, 6.8 billion ton-km of goods were managed to be shifted from Road to Sea through our Short Sea Shipping services. A major shift from Road to Sea well in harmony with the Marco Polo concept (Modal Shift Action).

RO-RO ACTIVITIES Unaccompanied Transport: A unique application in the sense that since May 1993 drivers utilize air way to Ljubljana, then travel to Trieste port by road following the embarking of their vehicles in Ro-Ro and be at Trieste the same time with the vessel. Thus the driver is able to rest for 2 days after the vehicle is embarked on the ship, enabling an efficient means of transport. In 2004, our 40.000 drivers were transported this way.

ROLLING MOTORWAY ACTIVITIES We are continuously encouraging our members to utilize the Road-Rail combinations in Europe, particularly in Hungary-Austria (Szeged-Wels and Sopron-Wels) and those running in Austria (Villach-Wels) as well as those lines in Italy-Austria (Trieste-Salzburg).

As a result of our interventions, the usage of these lines have increased by 100% over a period of 3 years (2001- 2004) from 20.000 to 40.000. In the year of 2005, we anticipate the usage of the Rolling Motorway lines to increase by a further 15% to reach 46.000. ROLING MOTORWAY ACTIVITIES

CONCLUSION Founded 11 years ago, with the aim of providing an alternative route for Turkish transport operators, today a state of the art transport chain has been created between Turkey and Europe. The Short Sea Shipping operation combined with railway operation, provides an answer to the present problems encountered in conventional road transport and is totally in line with the sustainable transport policies of the EU.
