ADMIN SERVICES OUTCOME 2 Describe the impact of changing working practices on the modern working environment
Lesson 2 – The Work Environment Today we will look at … Sick building syndrome Office ergonomics Office layout
What is Sick Building Syndrome? Symptoms: Headaches Sore eyes Sore throats Fatigue Poor concentration Reasons: Poor layout Contaminants Lack of ventilation Unsuitable lighting Decor Workers (often in new office buildings) believe that the building they work in makes them unwell.
What is office Ergonomics? This is where account has to be taken of the office environment and how it suits and impacts on the individual Furniture – adjustable chairs/desks to suit requirements Wall colours – relaxing Lighting – non-glare Ventilation – good circulation, not noisy Noise – glazing, wall and floor coverings Workstations – privacy, appropriate size Protective equipment – anti-glare screens, wrist rests
Office Layout Many organisations now design their workplaces to suit both Workflow (movement of people and paper around the office) and Needs of employees Place associated workers together Dont have unnecessary physical barriers Site equipment centrally
Office Layout – Cellular Office ADVANTAGES Privacy Status Quiet Can regulate heat to suit self Can personalise surroundings DISADVANTAGES Wastes space Resources cannot be shared Feeling of isolation Uneconomic
Office Layout – Open Plan Office (often landscaped with partitions/plants/ furniture) ADVANTAGES Less wasted space Easy to supervise staff Can suit workflow/team working Shared resources Social layout DISADVANTAGES Can be noisy with many distractions Lacks privacy (carrels may be necessary) No status of own office Difficult to regulate heat to suit everyone
Impact of ergonomic environment on organisation and individual Improves morale and motivation therefore helps productivity Ensures effective flow of work Promotes health and safety at work Gives a positive image for the organisation Can be cost effective as a result of the above
