1 Writing a 5-paragraph Essay Rotondo, Jonathan Thinking is to talk with one's soul. Writing is to listen to it. Adapted by Mrs. Nancy Watts

2 When writing an essay: 1) Read the information about the essay. 2) Decide on a topic. 3) Brainstorm three strong points about your topic. 4) Include 5 paragraphs. 5) Always set-up an outline.

3 The Topic The topic for this essay is as follows: What is your favorite season? 1. Choose a season: Our essay will be about summer. 2. Brainstorm about why summer is your favorite season (3 reasons). (1) vacation(3) camping (2) swimming

4 Outlining Any Essay 1.Introductory Paragraph (Has topic and subject in first sentence.) 2.To begin with, & 1 st point 3.Secondly, & 2 nd point 4.Furthermore, & 3 rd point 5.In conclusion, (repeat Introductory paragraph)

5 Outlining Our Essay Topic: What is your favorite season of the year? 1.Introductory Paragraph: favorite season = summer (has topic & subject in first sentence). 2.To begin with, (vacation) 3.Secondly, (swimming) 4.Furthermore, (camping) 5.In conclusion, (repeat introductory paragraph)

6 Facts about paragraphs. Indent the first sentence only. Should contain 5 complete sentences. Depending on where the paragraph is in your essay, use appropriate beginning sentence with appropriate phrase. Stay on the topic of that paragraph.

7 1. Introductory Paragraph The introductory paragraph should include: (1) the essay topic & subject (2) each point of the essay (3 strong points) (3) a closing sentence (the pull together) (4) five sentences

8 1. Introductory Paragraph cont. [1 st ]Opening sentence includes the name of your essay. [2 nd ] To begin with, & give 1 st point [3 rd ] Secondly, & give 2 nd point [4 th ] Furthermore, & give 3 rd point [5 th ] Pulls paragraph together.

9 1. Introductory Paragraph (summer) Summer is my favorite season of the year. To begin with, being able to have a special vacation is always great. Secondly, swimming is a super activity during this season. Furthermore, I love camping with my family on the weekends. These are the reasons why summer is my best season.

10 2. To begin with, The second paragraph should be about the 1 st point. The first sentence should begin with the statement, To begin with,. The last sentence pulls the paragraph together. The second paragraph should contain 5 sentences.

11 2. To begin with, (vacation) To begin with, being able to have a special vacation is always great. It is fun each year finding out where the family will be going. On vacation there are many fun activities to participate in each day. The different foods we eat are also great and a super experience. Looking forward to a special vacation is wonderful.

12 3. Secondly, The third paragraph should be about the 2 nd point. The first sentence should begin with the statement, Secondly,. The last sentence pulls the paragraph together. The third paragraph should contain 5 sentences.

13 3. Secondly, (swimming) Secondly, swimming is a super activity during this season. As a part of my swimming, diving lessons have been included. Everyday it is fun improving on all swimming skills. Swimming is also a fun activity to share with friends and family. I look forward each summer to the new swimming skills I will learn.

14 4. Furthermore, The fourth paragraph should be about the 3 rd point. The first sentence should begin with the statement, Furthermore,. The last sentence pulls the paragraph together. The fourth paragraph should contain 5 sentences.

15 4. Furthermore, (camping) Furthermore, I love camping with my family on weekends. I have learned how to set-up the camper and secure it for usage. Also, it is fun participating in all of the campground activities and meeting with friends. Each evening there is a group family time where we share many stories and tales from the past. Camping has become one of my favorite summer activities.

16 5. In conclusion, The last paragraph [In conclusion,] is a repeat of the first paragraph (topic, subject, 3 points, pull together sentence). The last paragraph should contain 5 sentences.

17 5. In conclusion, (repeat introductory paragraph) Summer is my favorite season of the year. Being able to have a special vacation is always great. Swimming is a super activity during this season. I love camping with my family on the weekends. These are the reasons why summer is my best season.
