The Council Rock Mathematics Enrichment Program

What is the Mathematics Enrichment Program? The purpose of the enriched program is to provide horizontal enrichment for the identified mathematically talented students in grades 4, 5, and 6. We focus on problem solving and mathematical investigations.

When will my child attend math enrichment? Your child will attend math enrichment 2 days per week at his/her regular math time.

What are your childs responsibilities so that he or she may remain in the program? Maintain an advanced level (4) in the regular classroom Complete all Mathematics homework and class work for the regular classroom Produce satisfactory work in the enrichment program

What will my child be learning in math enrichment? All students will focus on problem solving strategies Each grade level also has a core curriculum, which contains grade level appropriate special topics that will be covered throughout the year

Students will master a method of problem solving as follows: 1.Understand the problem 2.Plan how to solve the problem 3.Carry out the plan 4.Look back at the process

Problem solving strategies that will be covered include: Write an equationFind a pattern Make an organized listMake a table Solve a simpler problemGuess and check Acting out a problemExperiment Work backwardsDraw a picture Use logic and deduction

Special topics vary by grade level and may include…… Math history and number theory Probability Venn diagrams Tessellations Permutations and combinations 2 and 3-dimensional logic Coordinate, spatial, and translational geometry Pythagorean theorem Time and motion problems

Students will be asked to…… Analyze problems and devise one or more plans of attack and continue to work with the problem until a method is devised to solve it Communicate their solutions clearly, orally and in written form with others Strive for more than one method of solution Interact with each other at appropriate times to defend, clarify and generalize their thinking Create their own problems to expand their understanding

In addition to the curriculum, students will participate in the PML contest and the Math Olympiad contest The PML, or Pennsylvania Math League contest, is given once a year in April. The Olympiad contest is held 5 times throughout the year, on a monthly basis, beginning in November. This contest applies students problem solving skills. Five points may be earned during each contest for a cumulative total of 25.

Where can I find resources to help my child? The school website is a valuable resource. You can find links to many sites by visiting the Math Specialists website Please take a parent resource sheet, which lists websites, games and books that may be helpful

How will you know your child is progressing in the enrichment program? Look through your childs work from the class and ask questions to determine understanding You will receive mid-year and end-year progress reports for math enrichment You may contact the math specialist if you have any concerns

Know when to speak out, listen, cooperate, share, and negotiate Feel capable by contributing their talent in a meaningful way Acknowledge their own importance in a group situation Adapt to new viewpoints that add to their talent Our program helps children to……. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php? video_id=6010&title=Escalator

These children need to share their talent, as the need to understand and apply mathematics in everyday life and in the workplace has never been greater.

Through this program, our goals are: To encourage and inspire our students to seek out the wonders of mathematics To help our students become life-long learners and powerful problem-solvers. To develop within our students mathematical knowledge and understanding that will empower them to be successful contributors in a global society.
