Understanding the Science Test EOC Biology Mark Watrin Science Coordinator ESD112 Science, Technology, and Society Transfer and apply abilities in science and technological design to develop solutions to societal issues
Application Technological Design Process Criteria for Success
Fact First Questioning Application Scenario Guidelines Application scenarios describe a technological design process students use to solve a problem. The problem must be one that involves a Life Science System* Write out the steps of a technological design process.
Glossary Definition Technological design process: A sequence of steps used to define and solve a problem. The steps may include: defining the problem in terms of criteria and constraints, gathering information about the problem through research, generating ideas for possible solutions, synthesizing or selecting of one or more promising ideas or solutions, constructing a plan or model to test the proposed idea or solution, redesigning if needed and communicating the results
From the Item Specifications The Steps Define the Problem Gather Information Generate Ideas Test Ideas Redesign as needed Communicate results Attribute points Research the Problem Scientific Research Explore Ideas (multiple) Scientific Ideas Use Test Results to…. Modify a design
How have they done? 2007 HS Lifting a Load 2011 Mean 1.9 / 4 48% Problem Solving a Living System
The Technological Design Process
Research the Problem Understand the Science in the research Multiple ideas for solving the problem Pursue one idea Explain the science in the chosen idea Define the Problem
HS Lifting a Load The lever system James and Heidi designed did not lift the box high enough. Describe how you would scientifically design a new solution or redesign their solution to the problem using some or all of the materials and tools listed below. Only these materials and tools may be used….. Note: This Scenario was also used to test: Energy Transfer Systems thinking Force & Motion
The problem is defined. Research is provided Ideas : all are correct, what do you want to do first?
Jose and Tasha want to improve the soil in the garden by increasing the population of worms in the soil. Describe how to begin solving this problem. Problem Redesign Same 4 steps Science Update Document
