Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 2 AIM Consortium Eurescom GmbH, Germany France Telecom, France Keletron Special Electronic Applications Ltd, Greece Cefriel, Italy Politecnico di Milano, Italy Indesit, Italy Döbelt Datenkommunikation, Germany Infineon, Germany Power Plus Communications AG, Germany Philips Electronics Nederland B.V. BlueChip Technologies SA, Greece

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 3 AIM Project Objectives Main project goal To define a generic technology for managing the energy consumption of home appliances Detailed objectives Management of the energy consumption of home appliances beyond the simple ON/OFF model Design of a generic method for measuring energy consumption Design of an energy resources virtualisation environment for building energy management services. Application of energy saving strategies Evaluation of the AIM technology with involvement of real users Dissemination of AIM technology to relevant standardization bodies and the scientific community.

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 4 Considered Appliances White goods Washing machine Dish washer Oven A/V equipment TV, home cinema Set-up box Communications equipment DECT phone Routers (e.g. WLAN) Generic approach – to include further appliances E.g. lighting, heating, air conditioning, …

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 5 Applications for Various User Groups Residential users Application for energy saving Reduction of related costs Improvement of Quality of Life (QoL) Network subscribers and operators Remote control of appliances Services for energy saving Power distribution network operators Metering and related services

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 6 Just Few Use Case Examples Leaving the household Lighting, TV, and WLAN router off/sleep-mode Delayed washing machine start Depending on day-time power costs According to a chosen washing programme Remote energy management Through web interface and mobile devices Energy consumption optimisation E.g. offered by network and/or grid operators

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 7 AIM Architecture

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 8 Generic System Architecture AIM service logic In the gateway or external service platform EMD - Energy Management Device Implementation of energy management functions

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 9 AIM Gateway ESTIA gateway based on open services execution OSGi framework As a passive component Bridging between home and wide area networks As an active AIM component Appliance capabilities discovery Appliances and user profiling Management of the user interface Energy monitoring and management through communication with the EMD

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 10 EMD – Energy Management Device The main device for power consumption management Energy monitoring Monitoring the energy consumption and reporting (e.g. via gateway) Energy management Maintaining energy consumption thresholds set by users Switching on/off of appliances and standby management Switching among appliance specific programmes/modes Monitoring of command enforcement Interfaces to Communications networks – home and WAN For communications and energy management purposes Power network Internal control buses of appliances

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 11 EMD Hardware Configuration

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 12 Work done Appliances profiling Characterization of energy consumption per internal function (e.g. washing programmes) Implementation of ON/OFF and standby functions Profiling methodology established Profiles for considered appliances defined EMD and gateway prototypes ready Communications interfaces specified Allowing communications within AIM architecture

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 13 AIM Architecture Interfaces

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 14 Work in Progress Device virtualisation environment Virtualisation logic ensuring creation of energy saving services and applications User interface – for residential users Communications and power operators platforms Ensuring management of EMDs and appliances Components integration Testing of integrated AIM components EMD/gateway and appliances EMD/gateway and virtualisation logic Target: AIM architecture evaluation

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 15 AIM – Relation to User Behaviour What is AIM not doing (directly) Creating related awareness among users Investigating possible behaviour changes However, AIM (outcome) is based on User awareness on Energy Efficiency Future change of the user behaviour Who are the users? We are the users! We are the users! – residential users But not only we!

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 16 User Awareness and Willingness Residential users To use the (AIM) technology Appliance manufacturers To apply the technology – on no/low costs Service providers To create services based on business models Power grid operators To offer flexible cots models for customers Motivation for all is essential Regulation, Legislation, Policy (European, global)

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 17 Using AIM Technology No particular user interaction necessary Autonomous AIM functions Outsourced system configuration By service and/or grid operators By manufactures providing appliance profiles However, user involvement will remain Following-up the energy consumption Configuration of the efficiency plan Manual user actions – not wanted, but needed Change of the user behaviour By operating and handling an Energy console Instead of controlling multiple appliances But also not only electrical devices – heating, watering, etc.

Dr. H. Hrasnica, AIM project: ICT21-EE – ICT for Energy Efficiency, Strasbourg, 11 December 2009 18 AIM Evaluation Trials Integration on a single platform At France Telecom labs – home environment Architecture and component tests Usability evaluation by test users Methodology for evaluation of energy saving First results on the achieved energy saving Integration in real households in Greece Usability tests by real users Evaluation of achieved energy saving
