Jacksonville High School CAREER & TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT Welcomes you to our presentation of Business Career Preparation Program for the 2006-2007 school year

Purpose of our Program To offer Junior and Senior students at J.H.S an opportunity to gain experience and skills in the workplace that will help them make informed and intelligent career choices for the enrichment of their lives.

Juniors Junior Students will be enrolled in a Career Preparation class and be released for work at 1:27. They will be expected to work at least 12 hours per week.

Seniors Senior students will be enrolled in a Career Preparation class and be released at different times according to their course requirements. They will be expected to work at least 15 hours per week.

No student should exceed 40 hours of work per week!!! Career Prep students are expected to retain good attendance, grades, and conduct during their regular school times.

Career Prep class time is essential Class time will include a variety of activities. Students will be expected to keep an on going record of work, time sheets, and payment information. THESE ARE STATE REQUIREMENTS.

Other class information Students will be given a grade for these objectives every three weeks. If the necessary paperwork is not there, a failing notice will be mailed to the student at home.

Suggested work areas for students Office Data entry Word processing Retail Supermarket Plumbing Feed sales and service Ranch employee Construction work Auto mechanic Child care Restaurant Advertising Legal offices Wholesaling Interior design

Speaking of finding a job… Your student may be looking for his first job this summer. Please pick up a copy of our information sheet to help students be successful in job searching!

Students are expected to work for an established business!!!! If you are uncertain about your job choice, Come by our classroom and talk to us.

Family Businesses One of the most important objectives of the Business Career Preparation Program is to encourage students to learn productive work ethics, effective communication skills, and knowledge of employee interactions. We feel it is in the students best interest to learn these lessons outside the home or family business atmosphere.

But if you have concerns about family opportunities, call and set up a time to meet with the CATE director and myself and we will be glad to discuss it with you privately!

Career Preparation students may not work… At any establishment that violates child labor laws (example, operating heavy machinery) At any establishment that is more than 30 miles outside of the Jacksonville city limits In any capacity that requires them to serve alcohol

Carefully Consider your job choices!!!!! Interview for jobs that will be fulfilling, as well as an opportunity to gain strong, transferable work skills. We encourage students to obtain jobs that will further educate them and not just pay for the extras!!!!

Career Prep students do not… Attend work if they have not attended school, even for one period (State Requirement) Teacher approval can be obtained for special circumstances.

We encourage our students… Not to change jobs while involved with our program If this should become a necessity, they need to first speak with their teacher before making any decisions Students are required to give their employer a two week grace period before leaving their jobs

If a student quits without notice… He or she cannot make higher than a grade of 50 for the 6 week grading period that the incident occurred in!!! We strive to teach our students that this is not good employee ethics.

Other Notes… Students need to plan their work day to allow for study, transportation to and from work, lunch and other necessities Students need to leave campus when they are released!!! They should not return to campus until after 3:23 unless arrangements are made with their teacher

The Jacksonville High School Code of Conduct Applies to students who are at work, as well as on campus. The rule states that the workplace is considered an extension of the classroom.

CAREER PREP STUDENTS Should have their own transportation and should not be required to rely on others. Waiting on campus for a ride is a problem for school administration and is discouraged.
