The student will identify cause-effect relationships. The student will use cause- effect to track plot events. The student will visualize plot events to identify cause- effect relationships.
If a dog eats your sandwich, (cause)
you wont have anything for lunch. (effect)
Because So Then Since These clue words help the reader to determine cause and effect relationships.
Cause Becky wears a white sweater. Effect Its hard to see Becky. She blends in with the sheep.
Cause Mrs. Prouty says, Pardon me, before she sneezes. Effect Mrs. Prouty seems very polite.
Cause Stargazer speaks softly. Effect Stargazer is mellow and quiet.
Cause Miguel wants to do something special to make Tia Lola feel welcome. Effect Miguel draws the Spanish word for welcome in the snow.
Cause Miguel feels like an artist as he draws in the snow. Effect Miguel thinks of his father, who is an artist.
Cause Miguels mixed feelings make Tia Lola feel unwelcome. Tia Lola does not know how to talk to Miguel because she does not speak English and he doesnt speak Spanish. Tia Lola thinks Miguel doesnt love her. Effect Tia Lola does not want to leave her room.

Cause Miguel announces there is a surprise for his aunt in the back yard. Effect Miguel sees the color comes back to Aunt Tias face, the sparkle returns in her eyes, and the beauty mark spreads to both sides of her mouth.
