3 WHAT IS STAND DOWN? Stand Down is a military term for retreat, rest, and recovery. It brings homeless men and women into a secure enclosure. It is designed as an intervention. It brings a wide range of essential services to homeless veterans. SUPERVISOR STEVE LAVAGNINO

4 History of Stand Down The first Stand Down was organized in 1988 by Vietnam Veterans in San Diego. It is a community-based intervention program designed to help the nations homeless veterans. 6 The Need for Stand Down The VA estimates that roughly 67,495 Veterans are homeless on any given night. – Perhaps twice that number of veterans experience homelessness over the course of a year. Of the estimated homeless veterans nationwide, an estimated 18,633 reside in California. SUPERVISOR STEVE LAVAGNINO

7 The Need for Stand Down 2011 Santa Barbara Common Ground Vulnerability Index: – 1143 surveys completed – 143 were homeless veterans (15%) SUPERVISOR STEVE LAVAGNINO
