1 Extraesophageal Saline During Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection in a Patient With Early Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma  Jian-jun Li, MD, PhD, Hong-bo Shan, MD, PhD, Long-jun He, MD, Guang-yu Luo, MD, Li-ming Chen, BA, Guo-liang Xu, MD, Yin Li, MD, Rong Zhang, MD  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 98, Issue 5, Pages (November 2014) DOI: /j.athoracsur Copyright © 2014 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

2 Fig 1 Endoscopic images of esophageal lesion in a patient with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. A superficial lesion detected in the lower thoracic esophagus by standard endoscopy was classified as type IIa. 3 Fig 2 Endoscopic ultrasonographic (EUS) images of esophageal lesion in this patient with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). (A) An early mucosal lesion visualized by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and staged as T1a. (B) After submucosal saline injection (SSI), a saline cushion was formed in the submucosa. A thickened mucosal lesion was visualized on EUS and was enhanced by the saline in the submucosa. The dim boundary between the mucosa and submucosa revealed that the lesion had invaded the submucosa; therefore, the ESCC was staged as T1b. A dark, liquid area in the extraesophageal space representing extraesophageal saline separating the esophageal adventitia from adjacent tissues and organs. 4 Fig 3 Endoscopic ultrasonographic (EUS) images of esophageal lesion in another patient with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. (A) An early lesion was visualized by EUS. (B) After submucosal saline injection, a saline cushion was formed in the submucosa. A thickened mucosal lesion was visualized on EUS and was enhanced by the saline in the submucosa. No extraesophageal saline was found. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  , DOI: ( /j.athoracsur ) Copyright © 2014 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions
