2 Figure 1 Proposed role of the erythroid factor erythroferrone. After erythropoietic stimulation, differentiating erythroblasts in the bone marrow and spleen rapidly increase erythroferrone (ERFE) production in an erythropoietin (EPO)-dependent and STAT5-dependent manner. ERFE is secreted into the circulation and acts directly on the liver to repress hepcidin production. ERFE-mediated hepcidin suppression in turn increases iron availability for new red blood cell synthesis. 3 Figure 2 Immunohistochemistry of CD40 staining in kidney biopsies from patients with FSGS recurrence. (a) No CD40 staining is observed in the podocytes of this normal human glomerulus from the tumor-free part of a total nephrectomy for renal-cell carcinoma. Vascular hilum is marked by an arrowhead. (b) Focal podocyte labeling for CD40 (arrow) in a case of FSGS recurrence. (c) Strong CD40 signal is observed in the hyperplastic podocytes (arrows) covering an FSGS recurrence lesion. Scale bars, 25μm. Kidney International  , DOI: ( /ki ) Copyright © 2014 International Society of Nephrology Terms and Conditions
