2 Figure 1 Exonuclease-Resistant RNA Structures in the Zika Virus 3' UTR Lead to Subgenomic Flavivirus RNA Production (A) The 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of ZIKV RNA is highly structured. These structures include two complex RNA folds that are resistant to 5′→3′ exonuclease degradation (xrRNA1 marked in red, xrRNA2 in blue). The dashed line represents the pseudoknots (pk) predicted to form in the ZIKV 3′ UTR. (B) Xrn1 processivity is blocked by the pseudoknot-reinforced xrRNA1 structure, allowing for the production of subgenomic flavivirus RNAs (sfRNA) during ZIKV infection.
