Issue 2 April 18, 2004 http://www.svivon.net SVIVON A Wandering Magazine of Nature & Environment in Israel

Here we are, celebrating the second issue of Svivon. To be honest, we were surprised by the success! We were blessed with an overflowing Inbox, rich in feedback and new material you have been quick to send us. And so, we have managed to prepare another issue of Svivon earlier than previously planned. Dear Readers/Viewers/Surfers ! Front page: Bicycle track along the Yarkon River in Ramat-Gan. Photo: Svivon team. From the editorial desk Svivon Spring has arrived earlier than expected this year, and we had very little time to enjoy the peak of Natures blossom, which covered the country with yellow carpets of Charlocks, Crown daisies and Thorny burnets. In this issue well bask in some of that yellow, take a walk around a Haifa neighborhood, dive in the Red Sea, visit Tsvikas kitchen in Kiryat Bialik and more… Yours, The Svivon Team Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

When we first created Svivon, one of our goals was to show that everybody can catch beautiful and intersting sights, everywhere around us. You just need to remember to look, and theres no need to go to great lengths from home, to do so. Geyzi Shavit from Haifa answered the call and sent us a few of his photos. Heres what he writes : Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004 Postcards From My NeighborhoodPostcards From My Neighborhood

I am a 70 year old senior citizen, and I like to roam the streets of my neighborhood on the Carmel ridge from time to time. Sometimes I go in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon. While wandering, my camera catches the sights: Distant views, wild flowers blooming by the road or at the edge of a field or the woods, sometimes flowers in a beautifully kept garden or in a flower pot on a window sill. Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

Its Passover eve. Everyone at Tsvikas home are busy, getting ready for the Seder. Suddenly… Tsvika spots a young couple mating passionately on the porch door! He doesnt hesitate, and reaches for his camera right away. 16 Land of Milk and Honey …and an occasional fighter chopper One lazy Friday noon At the beginning of April, Lior Kamron was hiking in one of the creeks up in the north, when suddenly… Two very large birds appeared, out of the blue, to perform some maneuvers! Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

k_lior@netvision.net.il The choppers displayed their abilities To the bewildered hikers below. Lior claims that there is some beauty to it… of a quaint kind… Hiked and photographed: Lior Kamron Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

Different types of sponges Jellyfish polyps (A Jellyfish at its early stages) Soft Coral Buds Waterography This time, Ilan goes diving off the coast of Eilat, where a sunken missile boat lies. In the water, he meets the Eyelash Spider Crab (Schizophorys Aspera). This crab, which can be up to 10 cm (4 Inches) in size, disguises itself as a… coral reef (!) for protection from potential harm. To do this, it collects bits of corals and attaches them to its body… Ilan Ben Tovs underwater Photography corner Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

www.pbase.com/ilanbt At nights, the crab dares to go out from hiding in search of food, relying on his clever camouflage to stay safe. Ilans Gallery: So next time you go diving in the Red Sea and you see that the reef is moving… it may well be a natural phenomenon rather an after effect of something you drank! 21 About three years ago, an army of bulldozers conquered south west Petach-Tikva, and eliminated what was left of the once abundant orange groves, to prepare the grounds for a new neighborhood. The Lupins, old residents of the area, put up a fight. Each March they pop up and cover all the empty fields between the roads with their awesome bloom, and even peep from between the new sidewalk tiles. Revenge of the wild flowers Writing and Photos: Guy Shachar Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

A month has passed. By April the Lupins already carry the seed bags on their backs, to later disperse them on the ground, to make sure we will enjoy their colorful carpets again next year, covering every exposed piece of land. Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

Meanwhile….on the other side of town, the municipality has paved a new road. This didnt really impress the Crown daisies. It seems like they will not let the intrusive pavement decrown them without a fight… Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

But theyre not safe there forever. These days, the municipality is planning to replace them with perfectly designed and gardened traffic islands. So heres a thought: Why not leave the wild flowers to naturally decorate the streets themselves? It can even save a buck… Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

Last taste of the wild blooming before work… before it is all replaced by a screen and a keyboard. Last taste of the wild blooming before work… before it is all replaced by a screen and a keyboard. …And while you see the Gilat house, heres a last minute update for those of you who read the item on the kestrels in our first issue: On one of the windowsills on Gilats 2 nd floor, another couple of kestrels found a home! These intelligent creatures located the only flower box in the building! The folks at the office are already fantasizing about a webcam. (The reality TV channel is showing interest…) Meanwhile, my kestrels are feeding their three sweet chicks, and Motti Charter, the kestrel researcher, is now the proud father of a newly born human chick! Mazal Tov and good luck to everyone in nurturing their nest! …And while you see the Gilat house, heres a last minute update for those of you who read the item on the kestrels in our first issue: On one of the windowsills on Gilats 2 nd floor, another couple of kestrels found a home! 29 So you went out to be embraced by Mother Nature and were left wondering what those marks are and whos responsible for them? They are called Trail Marks. Youll find them in the more interesting areas out there, and their purpose is to guide us, the hikers, along the trail. In our tiny Israel there are thousands of miles(!) of marked trails, some designated for hiking, some for cycling and some - for 4x4 vehicles. The trails are marked so theyll pass through the most interesting sites and prevent passage through sensitive areas. Whos painting nature ? Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

The marks appear in the shape of a white rectangle around a colorful stripe. The rectangle, which acts as a signpost for hikers, is an internationally agreed marking that you can find in many countries. Unlike in the skiing world, the color of the stripe has no significance in terms of trail difficulty! Different trails are assigned different colors only in order to tell them apart in areas that have many trails (As seen in this picture - taken in the Carmel Park). Svivon – Issue #2 – April 18, 2004

On the next issue: Svivon reveals … After years of hearing legends telling us about the dwarves who paint the trail markings at night, A Svivon team member finally managed to catch one of these dwarves red handed. Trail marking in Israel is run by The Israeli Trail Committee, and various organizations take part in the effort, among which the society for the protection of Nature in Israel, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, JNF, the Youth Hostel Association, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Tourism and the Survey of Israel Center.
