Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development Post occupancy evaluation of low energy schools By Michael Roberts

Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development Academic Literature Review POE results show that buildings with higher energy consumption frequently cause high levels of discomfort amongst occupants (Bordass, 2001). Watson et al (2005) in the paper 'Bringing Post Occupancy Evaluations to Schools in Scotland', suggest that 'POE is well suited to supporting local authorities, collecting feedback from users and sharing outcomes with stakeholders'. In a systematic review of 30 scientific research reports into health and performance, Mendell and Heath (2005) found that a substantial proportion of children's exposure to indoor pollutants occurs within schools.

Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development Proposed Research Methodology 1.POE: Adopting standard POE methodology available from the www.usablebuildings.co.uk 2.Management: The Soft Landings Framework aims to encourage better briefing, design, handover, and building performance in use. 3.Holistic Analysis: To include wider data sets: A - Absences figures, Exam results, Discipline B - Job satisfaction, Student happiness C - 8 Doorways Framework (Travel/Waste…)

Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development The make-up of BSF Well-being EnergyEducation ECM BSF ESD Every Child Matters is a shared programme of change to improve outcomes for all children and young people. It takes forward the Government's vision of radical reform for children, young people and families. Education for sustainable development aims to help people to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to make informed decisions for the benefit of themselves and others, now and in the future, and to act upon these decisions. Building Schools for the Future is the biggest-ever school buildings investment programme. The aim is to rebuild or renew nearly every secondary school in England.

Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development The next 6 Months? Phase 1 POE: Energy Survey - CO2 calculations (kWh/m2 per annum) – how efficient is the building? - Recognising limitations of BMS data. Phase 1 POE: Occupancy Survey - Gather existing data already carried out by Leicester City Council on occupancy - Determine whether additional occupancy surveys are necessary. Phase 1 POE: Walk-through Surveys

Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development Industry Contacts/Advisors Roderic Bunn (BSRIA) is an expert with POE and the Soft Landings Framework. Adrian Leaman managing director of Building Use Studies (BUS) specialises in the management and application of feedback from building occupants about their needs and requirements. He is also the secretary of the Usable Buildings Trust (UBT). Chris Watson, Architect and POE specialists. www.postoccupancyevaluation.com
