Being concentrated, the oils contain virtually all of the plants healing nutrients, oxygenating molecules, amino acid precursors, coenzyme factors, trace minerals, enzymes, vitamins, hormones and more. doTERRA essential oils are THE purest in the industry. There are several grades of essential oils. The first are synthetic, and are used for fragrance in perfumes and often in lotions, creams, etc. There are also food grade essential oils used for flavoring. The FDA maintains a list of ingestible products called Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). This second class of oils includes the GRAS listed oils. The next category of oils is called “therapeutic.” These are oils that are sold with the intention of being used for medicinal uses. There are many companies selling “therapeutic” oils, but there is no standard as to what that means. At doTERRA, we created a higher standard called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, which involves extensive testing both at harvest, once delivered, and after bottling to ensure purity and consistency of constituents. This is why doTERRA is able to guarantee our essential oils.
CPTG is a registered standard with the International Standards Organization. Every essential oil company the opportunity to obtain that internationally recognized standard, by passing it’s strict testing requirements. Only one company has stepped up to the plate and passed the tests and obtained the CPTG standard and that is doTERRA.
I use ONLY dōTERRA Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG™) essential oils. Here's why: first of all, dōTERRA takes care to monitor the growing and harvesting of the plants to ensure that the proper methods are used to produce the highest quality oil. In addition, dōTERRA has each and every batch of oil tested by an independent lab using both a Gas Chromatography and a Mass Spectrometry test.
Why is it important to use both tests? The answer is that a Gas Chromatography test only counts the different constituents of an oil to verify that all are present. It does not and cannot differentiate between synthetic oils and natural oils. If a company relies only on a GC test, they may end up selling 100% pure synthetic oil when they believe that they are selling 100% pure natural oil.
The Mass Spectronomy test reveals whether a not a sample is pure or adulterated, natural or synthetic. It is the more expensive test, but absolutely vital to ensure that every bottle that is shipped to a consumer conforms to the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade standard.
Many essential oil companies believe that they are selling the highest quality available, but if they do not test each and every batch with a GC and a MS test, how do they know? The founders of dōTERRA choose to take home less money in order to ensure that every batch of oil is Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oil. They do this because they use these oils on themselves and their families and want the highest quality available for their personal use.
AFNOR or the Association Française de Normalisation is a French national organization and member body of the ISO or International Organization for Standardization. The ISO is an international standard-setting body that promulgates worldwide industrial and commercial standards. Although the ISO is a non-governmental organization, it often works with government organizations and industry leaders to set standards that sometimes become law.
Although AFNOR and the ISO have monograph standards for certain plant extracts in different industries, they do not have standards for grades of essential oils, particularly “therapeutic grade” essential oils. In fact, there are no current regulatory standards for the use of the descriptor “therapeutic grade” in the industry and anyone can use the term to describe their essential oils regardless of their purity or potency.
Our CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality standard is more rigorous, yet very different in nature and function than the ISO monographs for aromatic extracts. This statement, however, should not be interpreted that AFNOR or the ISO has a standard for “therapeutic grade” essential oils or that any essential oil product has AFNOR or ISO certification or approval. They do not certify brands nor do they grade essential oils as therapeutic, grade-A, premium, etc. The ISO monographs for essential oils are not comparable nor serve the same quality control function as the dōTERRA CPTG standard.
The absence of regulatory standards regarding the use of the terms “essential oil” and “therapeutic grade” are the very reason for developing a higher standard of quality control we have branded CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. Although there are good essential oils available to consumers, many products claiming to be essential oils often are not pure aromatic extracts and often contain fillers and non-aromatic compounds. The dōTERRA name and CPTG registered trademark represent our guarantee of 100% pure essential oil extracts and accurate product labeling.
