3 THE POSITION: Forestry Technician (Helitack), GS-0462-05 Senior Firefighter Performs recurring fire suppression duties as a Senior Firefighter on a Helitack Crew. Loads helicopter personnel and cargo considering methods, weight distribution, necessity for securing, total weight, etc. and completes manifests of personnel and equipment being transported to the fire or other work site. Inventories and inspects helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment. Certified in the use of long line external loads and the operation and maintenance of accessory equipment. May serve as a certified rappeller.

4 CENTRAL OREGON FIRE MANAGEMENT SERVICE (COFMS) The Central Oregon Fire Management Service (COFMS) area includes the Deschutes National Forest, the Ochoco National Forest, and the Prineville District BLM. These three units are managed cooperatively under combined leadership, with an Interagency Fire Management Officer, two Deputy Fire Management Officers, and other sub-staff functions working for a Board of Directors including Forest Service District Rangers and BLM Field Managers from both agencies. These units work to manage fire, fuels and aviation programs on the public lands throughout Central Oregon.Deschutes National Forest, Ochoco National Forest, the Prineville District BLM. Public lands in Central Oregon are widely scattered. The Prineville BLM district boundary encompasses approximately 12.7 million acres between the Columbia River to the north, south of the town of Crescent in Klamath County to the south, the Cascade crest on the west, and near the town of John Day at the eastern boundary. Within that broad area, the two forests and BLM holdings total over 4 million acres. COFMS is divided into four divisions,COFMS each managed by a Fire Management Officer. Dispatching is managed by the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center which also includes functions for the Oregon Department of Forestrys Prineville Unit. COFMS COFMS fire resources include engine crews, hand crews, water tenders, prevention units, lookouts, and an Interagency regional Rappel and local Helitack program. Region 6 Rappellers Central Oregon Rappel Crew is one of six rappel crews in the Pacific Northwest Region. 5 ABOUT THE PRINEVILLE AREA The City of Prineville is located 35 miles northeast of Bend and 30 miles southeast of Madras.City of Prineville The major highway through town is US highway 26. The population is around 10,000 in the city with approximately 17,000 living in the surrounding area. There are numerous parks in and adjacent to town; a public library; full service medical and dental facilities; shopping centers; a country club, two golf courses and numerous denominations of churches. SCHOOLS: The Crook County School System in Prineville consists of four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Central Oregon Community College (COCC) in Bend offers two-year programs as well as four-year degrees through Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. There are several private schools in town and there is also an active home-school program in both counties. HEALTH CARE: Prineville has one major hospital and two clinics. HOUSING: Rental apartments and houses are available. The approximate range for the monthly cost of rentals is $600-$700 for a two bedroom, one bath unit and around $750 for a three bedroom unit in either duplexes or apartments. The monthly rental cost for a three bedroom single-family house runs $800 and up. Prineville is a rapidly growing community with many new subdivisions. The average price for a home in Prineville is $175,000 and on rural property $250,000 and up depending on the availability of water. CENTRAL OREGON TRAVEL: The Central Oregon area is serviced by the Roberts Field-Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM), in Redmond, OR, approximately 16 miles from Prineville. Commercial service is provided by Horizon Air (part of the Alaska Air Group); United Express and Delta Connection (provided by SkyWest Airlines); and Allegiant Air.Roberts Field-Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM), Redmond, OR WEATHERWEATHER: Central Oregon is High Desert which means the climate is semi-arid and has four distinct seasons.Central Oregon Summer brings warm, sunny days with temperatures in the high 80s to 90s. There can be a few days in August where the temperature will reach the low 100s. Fall is pleasant and mild with average high temperatures of 75 degrees, and nighttime lows sometimes dipping into the 20s. Winter is relatively mild with the snowfall in the neighborhood of 8-10 inches, but it usually melts quickly. Temperatures are normally in the low to mid 20s and 30s. January can bring a week or two of sub-zero temperatures. Spring is usually sunny, but cool. The growing season is relatively short as the elevation of Redmond is 3,077, Bend is 3,623 and Prineville is 3,033 feet. Madras, with an elevation of 2,242 feet, enjoys a longer growing season.
