3 WiMedia Mission/Charter
To promote wireless multimedia communications and interoperability among devices within a personal operating space. The WiMedia Alliance charter is to develop a specification based on the IEEE standard with a focus on an ultra-wide band physical layer ( a). The Alliance will establish a certification and log program and promote the WiMedia brand. Our vision is that the WiMedia logo will universally offer users confidence in a positive experience, no matter the manufacturer or the device. Dr. John R. Barr, Motorola

4 WiMedia MAC Convergence Arch.
March 2003 doc.: IEEE /073r4 WiMedia MAC Convergence Arch. Common Platform: For all WiMedia devices Low-level Discovery & Connection Mgmt. QoS / bandwidth policing Priority & TDMA IP & non-IP transport Application Profiles: Streaming media applications Digital imaging and printing applications Applications (Minimum Format Support) Application Specific Profile High- Level Discovery Transport Control So, that’s the Alliance. Finally, these last two slides give a very high level look at our architecture as a work in process. On the bottom is the IEEE MAC & UWB PHY WPAN standard. Above that we are creating a modular solution including a common platform and application profiles. The common platform creates the basic set of services required by all devices. The profile architecture above that, provides the specific services needed by the target appliance. The number of profiles will be kept to a minimum, otherwise we’ll create our own interoperability issues. Currently there are only two profiles in development: one for streaming media and another for digital imaging and printing. Additional profiles are possible if we need to address specific application categories that present unique needs from the convergence implementation. 5 WiMedia Architecture Applications 15.3 MAC / 15.3a PHY IP UPnP
March 2003 doc.: IEEE /073r4 WiMedia Architecture Applications WiMedia Imaging & Printing WiMedia Streaming Media 3rd Party Platforms? e.g., Digital Home, WUSB, W-1394 This then shows one final aspect of the WiMedia architecture. The WiMedia common platform will be a certified element on which third party entities can use: We anticipate that Digital Home, Wireless USB and Wireless 1394 (‘Firewireless’) may leverage this common platform. This will provide both IP services as well as some specific native support required by those third party entities. WiMedia Common Radio Platform 15.3 MAC / 15.3a PHY IP UPnP Dr. John R. Barr, Motorola John Barr, Motorola

6 Working Relationship All of the WiMedia members are active in IEEE or a. WiMedia is working closely with the IEEE MAC and will provide comments, corrections, and suggestions for enhancements based on their efforts. The WiMedia Alliance would like the IEEE a task group to select a world-wide capable UWB PHY quickly. Dr. John R. Barr, Motorola
