1 BIOLOGY CLUB- SECOND MEETING 9/28/09

2 Volunteer Opportunities Many have expressed interest in volunteering both as individuals and as a group. Individual volunteering will take place on your own time and you will be responsible for setting it up. Local hospitals are very willing to accept individual, long-term volunteers. Registration packets can be picked up in the volunteer office of these hospitals.

4 www.houstonfoodbank.org Volunteer Hours- Warehouse Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday Night 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

5 www.houstonfoodbank.org Volunteer Hours- Kitchen Monday – Friday Two shifts, 20 people max 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

6 Houston Food Bank Must sign-up as a group at least 3-4 weeks in advance. Every volunteer must register online and fill out a liability waiver before the event day. Dress- code and safety rules must be followed. We can also drop off donations at the warehouse location the day of the event.

7 Armand Bayou Nature Center Located in Clear Lake a 2,500-acre wildlife refuge and wilderness preserve that educates the public about the environment

8 Armand Bayou Nature Center Special volunteer projects can be arranged for groups of volunteers. These projects may range from carpentry, painting, trail clean up, prairie restoration activities to administrative projects. Groups of volunteers are also welcome to help at special events like Prairie Pandemonium.Prairie Pandemonium

9 October 17 th, 2009 This important event will bring the ABNC prairies closer to a climax state of native wildflowers and grasses. Sign-in will begin at 8AM and the project will last from 9AM to noon. Lunch is included, and door prizes are too. Participants will need sturdy shoes and clothes that can get muddy. The nature center will provide tools and work gloves.

10 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer April 10-11, 2010 During the Event weekend, Volunteers are needed at Event Eve (Friday before the Event), Opening Ceremony (Saturday of the Event), along the route at Cheering Stations (Saturday and Sunday during the Event), at the Wellness Village to help set up tents for Walkers (both Saturday and Sunday), and at Closing Ceremony (on Sunday). Help out for a couple of hours or sign up for the whole weekend. 11 Houstons Ronald McDonald House Family Activity Program at Holcombe House Volunteers are needed to prepare meals, answer telephones, work fund raisers, donate items, help with parties for residents and participate in group work days No more than 15 volunteers.

12 Houston Zoo Currently Looking for Awesome Volunteer Groups for Zoo Boo 2009! October 17, 18, 24, 25, 31, 2009. Helping with Zoo event setup, greeting guests, manning craft and activity tables, providing event support, cleanup etc. The activities at each event vary greatly, but each one offers your group the opportunity to interact with Zoo guests during fun and interactive activities around the Zoo. Group Projects are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. We are currently looking for a large number of volunteers to assist during Zoo Boo this October.

13 Houston Arboretum Volunteer groups can be scheduled for half-day or full day projects. We recommend a minimum of 3 hours to include brief on-the-job training. Volunteer groups must be scheduled in advance. Projects can include trail resurfacing, habitat restoration, and boardwalk renovation.

14 Houston Arboretum Group volunteers are also needed at our special events throughout the year, including Arbor Day (January), Earth Day (April), ArBOOretum (October) and Holiday Open House (December). www.houstonarboretum.org

15 American Red Cross Located in the United Way Service Center on Bay Area Boulevard Volunteers are needed to: teach health and safety classes, provide transportation services to the elderly, and to clerical help in the administrative office.

16 Habitat for Humanity Helps people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. Volunteers are needed to help with construction, fundraising, and other activities.

17 St. Johns Hospital Volunteers will work in the gift shop, serve refreshments, assist with office work and deliver meal trays to patients. Volunteers who apply must attend an orientation.

18 Open House Will take place in between the Bayou Building and the Student Service building on October 3,2009. This is a great opportunity for the club to have a fundraiser. We need volunteers to help run this event

19 I heart UHCL Day On October 7, 2009 located in the atrium in the Bayou building. Will run from 10am- 1pm and 4pm-7pm Need volunteers to run the booth from 10am- 1pm

20 T- Shirts To look more official at our volunteering events and school events we want to be coordinated. Members were encouraged to design a logo for club t-shirts. The most popular one determined by a club vote will be printed on our new shirts. Decision on color and design.
