11 Experts Take: Plunging Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD A lot of times just plunging alone wont do the job. However, once you have a good plunger with a cup extension and good technique you should give it a try before attempting more intensive methods. Steps 1.To keep the mess to a minimum, cover the floor around the toilet with old newspaper or rags. You can also drape towels over the top of the toilet to minimize the inevitable "splatter" that always happens when using a plunger! Oh... and eye protection is advised, too!! 2.Insert the plunger into the bowl so that the wider part of the cup is pressed firmly against the bottom and push the handle in, collapsing the cup and expelling the air into the drain. 3.This first pump is the least effective. The following pumps will be decidedly more forceful because they will be pushing more water and less air. 4.Continue to pump in and out until the water drains from the toilet. It shouldn't take more than a dozen pumps to get results... usually much fewer. 5. IMPORTANT NOTE: Flush the toilet only ONCE. If the toilet is not flushing properly the first time, do not make multiple attempts. This could overflow your toilet and cause waste water to contaminate your floor. 12 Experts Take: Using Auger Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD If after using a plunger, the water is not draining out of the bowl as it should, you can use a closet auger. Typically it has a sharp spiral of wire on the tip and a semi-rigid wire that can flex through the bends in the toilet bowl. It also has a guide tube and an offset hand crank, to turn the spiral tip and clear the obstruction. Do not use other types of drain snakes with a toilet as they can damage the toilet. Steps 1.Retract the cable through the handle so the tip of the cable is at the end of the guide tip. 2.Insert the guide tip with the curve facing the direction of the drain. Some bowls drain to the front and some drain to the rear, which can be seen simply by looking into the bowl. 3.Crank the auger in one direction until is becomes tight then crank in the other direction. Repeat this until the auger is in as far as it will go. 4.Crank the auger to clear the obstruction. 5.Pull the guide tube out of the toilet. If it gets stuck push and pull gently or turn a crank back and forth while gently pulling up. Do not force the auger or you may break the toilet bowl. 6.After breaking up the clog, use the plunger to move the material down the drain line. 7.If the water seems to be properly draining, go ahead and try flushing the toilet. 13 Experts Take: Adjusting water level Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD After a flush, the tank begins to refill. It stops automatically when it reaches a preset level. In nearly all cases, a float is lifted by the rising water. When the float gets high enough it closes the water valve. In order to adjust the water level, you must set the height at which the float shuts off the water valve. There are several styles of floats. In older toilets, the float hangs at the end of an armature, along metal or plastic rod. Where that arm connects to the water valve there is usually a screw. Adjusting that screw will change the level at which the water valve shuts off. If there is no screw or it is already at its maximum, you may be able to bend the metal arm, but you should remove it from the valve or risk damaging the fill valve. In newer toilets the float is often a collar around the fill valve and rides up and down vertically. The float typically has a spring clip connecting it to a metal rod which connects to the valve shut off control. Squeeze the spring clip to slide the float up or down the metal rod. Manufacturers have several variations on the fill valve mechanism, but they all include a method for adjusting the water level. Close inspection should make it clear how to adjust particular fill valves. 14 Experts Take: Clear water way holes in rim Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD Under the rim of the water closet bowl are rim holes. They get a build up of minerals from the water. Steps 1. Take a old wire coat hanger and break it in half. 2.Then take the part of the coat hanger and a small handheld mirror to look up under the rim to locate the holes and poke each hole clean with the coat hanger. 3.After poking the rim holes clean pour CLR into the overflow in the tank. This will help dissolve any minerals in the flush rim of the bowl. 4.Try flushing some toilet paper down a few times. If it flushes normally by the third flush that means it is cleared. 15 Learn More: Plunger Did you know that there are actually two different types of plungers? 1) Toilet Plunger 2) Sink Plunger. A toilet plunger is the proper plunger to use to unstop a toilet. This plunger is shaped like a half moon on the top and has a collar extension on the bottom that is designed to fit snugly in the hole at the base of the toilet bowl. A sink plunger is shaped like an open half moon. Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD <<Back

16 Learn More: Auger The term toilet auger is used interchangeably with toilet snake and closet auger. Youll even find it referred to as a toilet jack or electric eel. The design of all modern closet augers is based on the water screw first invented by Archimedes over 2,000 years ago. Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD <<Back

17 Learn More: Water Level Adjusting the level of water in the toilet tank keeps the toilet flushing completely. The water level normally falls about 1 inch below the rim of the overflow tube. Lower levels don't allow the float ball to rise high enough to close the ball cock; a water level that is too high will continuously run. Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD <<Back

18 Learn More: Water Way holes Water way holes are also called siphon holes. A toilet bowl uses a series of small drain holes located around the bowl's rim to drain the water out of the tank and into the bowl, flushing out the old bowl water and filling it with fresh water from the tank. Deposits from hard water or sediment in the plumbing gather over time, partially or even completely obstructing the holes. The clogged holes can result in the toilet flushing weakly, but you can correct the problem with either an instrument or a cleansing solution. 19 Multi-Skills Plumbing Services LTD Best Practices for Trouble Shooting WC Flush Problems 1.Most times when a WC is not flushing properly it is due to a clogged drain. Check the problem toilet by dumping about 1 gallon of water into it from a bucket. If it flushes down fine, the drain is probably okay. If it flushes poorly, the drain is probably clogged. 2.If clogged, plunge first, making sure you use a plunger for toilets. If plunging doesnt solve the problem use a auger 3.If unclogging doesnt work check the water level inside the tank to make sure it rises to within 1/2 inch of the top of the overflow tube. 4.If adjusting water level doesnt work check flapper ball and flush handle 5.If flapper ball and flush handle are ok, check the water way holes if they are blocked 6.If water way holes are not the problem, the vent may be the problem 7.If none of the above prove to be the problem the toilet may be dead and need to be replaced Click here to download a sheet that you can use as a guide on the jobhere Next >> <<Back Read up more http://www.toilet- repairs.com/flushin g-problems.html http://www.toilet- repairs.com/flushin g-problems.html http://www.selfhe lpforums.com/sho wthread.php?t=153 45 http://www.selfhe lpforums.com/sho wthread.php?t=153 45 http://www.mast erplumber.net/bad _flush4.htm http://www.mast erplumber.net/bad _flush4.htm
