What is ESY? Extended School Year services are special education and related services provided beyond the normal school year.

Who is ESY for? ESY services are recommended for any student in special education that meets the ESY criteria as outlined in state and federal law.

Why is ESY in place? 80% MayJan. Aug. 50% Oct. 70% Loss of skill Progress It is taking longer than 6-8 weeks (or 1 grading period) to relearn the skill to an adequate level to continue to receive a free appropriate public education. Some students have difficulty retaining critical skills during long school holidays and/or summer and are unable to relearn those critical skills within a reasonable time when the normal school year begins or resumes.

ESY services are provided beyond the normal school calendar. When is ESY?

Where is ESY? ESY services are primarily provided on a designated campus, however ESY is not limited to campus based instruction only.

The need for ESY is considered by a students ARD committee annually. How is a student determined eligible for ESY?

ESY is not… Summer school for students with disabilities; To develop new skills; For students who have failed, are failing, or are behind; To make up absences; Respite care; Child care; Intended to maximize educational opportunities or potential growth; One size fits all; or Automatically renewed.

ESY is… To prevent loss of previously learned skills; Available to students determined eligible by supporting documentation; To be discussed and determined by an ARD Committee; Determined on a case by case basis; and Evaluated annually on data collected during the current year to determine eligibility.

In GCISD a student is eligible for ESY when the ARD committee determines that the student meets the ESY criteria and agrees that ESY is necessary for the student to receive a free appropriate public education. GCISD does not limit ESY services to students within specific disability categories. GCISD does not limit the type of services provided through ESY. ESY services include both instructional and related services (e.g. academics, speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, in-home training, etc.) The frequency and duration of ESY services are determined on a case by case basis by the ARD Committee.
