1 How can I connect what I am reading to myself and the world around me?
Making Connections How can I connect what I am reading to myself and the world around me?

2 Connection=Comparison
When you make a connection, you are comparing two ideas. The first idea is from something you are reading. Your second idea is ANYTHING the story makes you think of.

3 Text to Self A text to self connection is when you find something in your story that reminds you from something or someone in your own life.

4 Text to Text A text to text connection is when something in the story reminds you of another book that you have read

5 Text to World A text to world connection is when something in your book reminds you of an issue or event that is happening in our world.

6 Text to Media A text to media connection is when your book reminds you of any type of media. This could be a song, music video, movie, magazine, newspaper, or website.

7 Question Questioning a book can happen in a few ways:
You might wonder why a character made a certain choice. You might ask what something in the story means. You might wonder why the author decided to write something in a particular way You might ask why the author decided to have an event take place the way it did.

8 Predict When you make a prediction, you are guessing what will happen later in the story. Predictions should be based on evidence in the story.

9 Infer When you infer, you take information that you are given to draw conclusions about someone or something.

10 Evaluate When you evaluate you explain your thoughts and opinions based on what you read. You might have an opinion about a choice a character makes. You might explain your opinions on how the book was written or how it ended.

11 How to do this in your log:
When you have a connection you first label the type of connection (TT, TS, TM, E, TW, I, Q, P) Then you explain what the connection is: Example: TM- When Harry Potter pulls Gryffindor’s sword out of the sorting hat, it reminds me of when Arthur pulls the sword out of the stone. In both stories they are able to use the sword because they are the chosen ones.
