Second Grade Curriculum Night

Guided Reading  Expectations

Guided Reading  Depending on your child’s ability in reading will depend on how often they meet with their teacher to read with a small group.  The book should be read/reread each night and should tell you about the story and/or the parent can ask questions off the sheet that was given by their teacher.  Parents should initial their child’s Reading Log after reading.

Text Connections with Evidence  Text to Self  Text to Text

What are Connections?  Text to Self is a connection with a book. Something in the book reminds you of something that happened to you.  Text to Text is a connection within two books. Something in one book reminds you of something in another book.

Writing Rubric/Grading  Writing is a Process  Types of Writing in 2 nd grade  Personal Narrative  Imaginative  Expository

What is on the Second Grade Writing Rubric?  8 complete sentences  More standard than invented spelling.  Capitalization/punctuation  Legibility/spacing/letter use  Describing words (3)  Opening sentence  Closing sentence  Transition words (3)  Voice

Asking Questions  Before you read  During your reading  After you read  Asking questions is a great place to start students’ thinking while reading!

Before You Read  Asking questions before reading gives them a purpose for reading and gets them engaged. When they are looking for the answer, students read more intently.  Before reading—What does the cover and picture make me think that the book will be about?

During Your Reading  Asking questions during reading makes sure they are thinking about what they read.  I don’t understand…….  It confused me…….

After You Read  Asking questions after reading causes them to be reflective about the author's choices and sometimes helps them draw a personal opinion about the text.  How could…….?  I wonder why……?

Inference  Definition  Using your background knowledge, pictures and clues from the story to make sense of things that the author did not share.
