JACLYN Summary of Learning throughout ECS 110! NOLL 2nd Year University 1st Year Education Program

2 Secondary Ed. Major: Biology Minor: Math
WHY EDUCATION? Secondary Ed. Major: Biology Minor: Math My teachers were some of the most important people in my life They helped me achieve my dreams, goals and love school which is what I want to do for other students to come Want to make a difference in other students lives to come, and teach them everything I know inside and out of the classroom to be successful Biology was my favourite subject: loved learning anatomy, cells, plants and animals Working with numbers comes very easy to me, like having formulas to follow Both of these, unlike say English, there is wrong or right answers

3 PRIOR TO THE FIRST CLASS
Excited Ready to start the first steps in my teaching career Ready to begin the new semester To learn, what I thought, would be the basics to teaching Unsure Didn’t know what the class would be like or what to expect Didn’t have much previous knowledge on the class

4 “This was NOT what I expected”

5 “How is this actually helpful in becoming a teacher?”

6 EYE OPENER Not even close to what I had imagined
Didn’t understand why were discussing these topics What their relevance was to teaching Why weren’t we learning how to make lesson plans or something like that?

7 THE REALIZATION We see and deal with students, young adults, the most during these times of discoveries about themselves (involving seeing race and discrimination, and self identity) We need to PROPERLY educate ourselves on these topics (why they are important, how they effect everyone, what we can do) We can create safe welcoming classrooms Can properly handled rude, racist and biased peoples opinions

8 SPECIFIC VIEW CHANGES… & NON CHANGES
Had new perceptions on how the aspects of our identity shape and affect us Some views didn’t change, such as “being Canadian” Yet, some were opened to aspects I didn’t know and fully understand such as white privilege

9 BEING CANADIAN My views DIDN’T change!
Many said everything people know about Canada is stereotypes These “stereotypes” include: maple syrup, hockey and curling fans, Tim Hortons, eh, being polite etc. etc. But are they really stereotypes?

10 “If you take that away what is Canada?”

11 STEREOTYPES OR CULTURE?
What is your definition to explain what Canada is like to someone who knows nothing about it if you take away those aspects? I think that these things make up part of our culture, even though some may say that’s “silly” I lived in the states for two years, and I noticed that these “stereotypes” are indeed what makes up Canada today

12 WHITE PRIVILEGE However, I did realize the true meanings and effects of my white privilege White privilege is where people who are white gain benefits over people of colour After learning more, I realized this is why I can feel uncomfortable When one challenges my beliefs and privileges, it is “rude” to me when in reality I am just using my privilege in a negative way. Has become so ingrained into everyone’s minds and is a social construct that its hard to break free from it

13 EFFECTS FROM MY WHITE PRIVILEGE
There are many negative effects from white privilege I think Either people, like myself, don’t realize they have (and are using their) white privilege Or people do know and use it in an unfair fair to better themselves over people of colour Whichever they are, it gives unfair advantages just because of a SKIN COLOUR After realizing I have white privilege it made me think into past experiences and for future ones… did I get the job because I was white? Was the black woman more qualified than me? Did I get let off that ticket because of my race? More than likely, yes

14 CONCLUSION Overall, this class was enlightening, helpful and had even bigger meanings towards being a future teacher than I had thought Learning is not going to be a straight and narrow path, there will be bumps in the road such as arguments, disbelief, and discomfort This is when we are actually learning the most, when stepping out of our comfort zone We must always keep our mind open to new ideas and how others think Its okay to slip into the narratives, as long as we realize what they are, why and how to overcome
