1 What appeal are advertisers using to get you to buy their product?
Ethos, Pathos, or Logos? What appeal are advertisers using to get you to buy their product?

2 Objective: Today you will decide if the follow ads are appealing mostly to your sense of ethos, pathos, or logos. Write down which sense it affects most (ethos, pathos, logos) and why / how it affects that. Your answer should be one complete sentence (or more if your answer is detailed!) per image.

3 ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS Ethos: Is it Ethical?
CHEAT SHEET FOR YOU TO USE AS YOU ANALYZE THE ADVERTISMENTS: Ethos: Is it Ethical? Pathos: Does it make you feel a strong emotion? Logos: Does it make you use your sense of reason?

4 RECAP! Ethos Ethos: Ethics
To make the audience decide right or wrong about what is being presented to it Usually uses an expert or credible source to help you with your decision Reflect political issues, national beliefs, religious issues, etc. for the area Relies on audience believing or trusting the source

5 RECAP! Pathos Pathos: Emotion
To make the audience feel something about what is presented to it Children, animals, illness, memories, etc… “Tugs at your heart strings”

6 RECAP! Logos Logos: Logic
To make the audience think about what is presented to it Statistics, facts, clear logic, etc… Very straightforward, and not “fluff”. It has a very scientific, factual approach.

7 Can some advertisements have more than one appeal?
Yes! The more appeals used in an ad the more likely the consumer is to connect with it. For our purposes, you should pick the MOST emphasized appeal used in each ad, including why you feel this is the most emphasized. You might receive bonus points for adding more than just the “most” emphasized appeal!
