4 How did it start? People wanted to organize their world so they began grouping, or classifying everything they saw.

5 Taxonomy-science of classifiying (grouping) living things.
Biologists who study this are called taxonomists

6 What % of living things have been discovered?
So far, we have discovered and classified only about 15% of all living things.

7 Who is Carolus Linnaeus?
Carolus Linnaeus developed the 7-level (taxa) classification system.

8 The Seven Level System Kingdom(biggest) Phylum Class Order Family
Genus Species(smallest) King Phillip Came Over For Good Spices

9 Categories within Kingdoms
Kingdoms are divided into groups called phyla Phyla are subdivided into classes Classes are subdivided into orders Orders are subdivided into families Families are divided into genera Genera contain closely related species Species is unique Categories within Kingdoms

10 Cougar

11 Florida Panther

12 Puma

13 Mountain Lion

14 Ghost Cat

15 Catamount

16 Devil Cat

17 There are at least 50 common names for
the animal shown on the previous 6 slides. Common names vary according to region. Soooo…… why would we use a scientific name?

18 To give every species a name based on a standard method so scientists from different countries can talk about the same animal without confusion

19 Binomial Nomenclature - a two name system for writing scientific names in Latin.
Binomial means two Nomenclature means name

20

21 An organism is known by two names…
Canis lupus Genus species words in latin are underlined when you hand write them. =gray wolf.

22 Genus… A genus consists of a group of closely related species
Other animals in the Canis group include dogs and coyotes The genus name is always Capitalized

23 Species... A species consists of like organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring Only grey wolves are known as lupus. The species name is always lowercase

24

25 Quick Review What are the seven taxa or levels?
Who designed the system? What 2 taxa are organisms named with?
