From: Opioid-Induced Endocrinopathy J Am Osteopath Assoc. 2009;109(1): doi: /jaoa Figure Legend: The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis controls the production and secretion of sex hormones. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is released by the hypothalamus and stimulates the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones cause the testes to secrete testosterone and the ovaries to release estrogen. As testosterone and estrogen levels rise, the hypothalamus produces less GnRH.
