1 Personal Success and Management
Taking charge of your life This powerpoint covers TEKS 3A; 3B; 3C

2 Personal Success? Don’t we all want success? Of course!
Are all people successful? Depends on who you ask Your success really has to do with how happy you are with your life and the choices you have made. A key factor in personal success is your Self Concept Self Concept is a mental picture of oneself It has two parts: Self Image = who you are Self Esteem = how you feel about who you are

3 Self Image = who you are Material Self = your possessions & your body
If you only focus on this, your self esteem will suffer Social Self = how we interact with others Parents, Siblings, Friends, Teachers, etc Spiritual Self = your values, beliefs, your imagination Your creativity comes from here Your “little voice” comes from here

4 What Influences You? What we believe about ourselves can be influenced… External Sources What you learn about yourself through others You are greatly influenced by music, movies, TV, books Careful – they are not always healthy influences!! Internal Sources Your inner voice influences you Is that voice positive or negative? Your symbols represent you as well Your clothing influences you

5 Making the Shift You must become aware of who you are so that you become an independent person. This means knowing your strengths and weaknesses. This means taking constructive criticism and applying it to yourself This means learning from your mistakes and failures This means shifting from allowing others to tell you who you are to you deciding who you are. After this slide, have students complete the personality tests.

6 Things to Remember: Negative brings Negative – this means if you think negative, you will get negative Positive is not Perfect – thinking positive does not mean you will be perfect You must believe in yourself enough to give it your best and be proud of what you gave. If you don’t give your best, you will have regrets and you will never reach your full potential. Remember – Tough times make you strong and staying positive will help you overcome issues.

7 Self Esteem Self Esteem is determined by YOU!!!
Others may influence you but you determine how you feel about what they say. Everyone has down days, that is normal You have to believe in your ability to overcome the “down days” and meet the challenges.

8 Accepting Who You Are Knowing and liking who you are does not mean you are cocky or conceited. Accepting yourself means you know you have strengths and you know you have weaknesses. You understand that you aren’t perfect but you believe in yourself enough to work to be as good as you can be. You also recognize when you have failed and you use it to make yourself better.

9 Show Responsibility Each day you make choices, you can show responsibility by making wise choices and taking the consequences of your choices. Here are ways that you can show responsibility: Obey Rules Help Others Keep your promises Carry out tasks Being responsible is one of the most important qualifications for success in any job.

10 Evaluate Your Value System
The way you meet your needs and wants is based on your values. Values are your beliefs about right and wrong and what is important in life. Some values we share with others: trust, freedom, good health, etc Other values are individual to us: being a good student or playing a sport well Values define who you are, affect your choices, and help you define your priorities. Values are influenced by your family, religion, teachers, friends, society and experiences

11 Setting Priorities Have you heard the statement “Get your priorities straight.” When someone uses this statement, they are indicating that you may be placing to much value on the wrong things. Priorities are another way of saying “what is important to me” If you want to know what your priorities are, look at how you spend your time, money and energy. You need to examine your priorities and make sure your priorities are helping you not hurting you. This is a BIG part of growing up.

12 Why are we talking about this?
Working in the hospitality industry can be challenging. Employees/Chefs/Managers all must be pleasant and helpful to guests; no matter how irrate or rude a guest may become, no matter how hectic your schedule becomes. To be able to perform your job in this industry you must have patience, high energy level and a positive attitude. This means that you have got to get it together.

13 Your Success Your success in this field depends on you!
People who are successful in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry have set high personal standards and manage themselves well. Are your values, habits and attitude taking you toward success? I’m asking you, because you will determine yourself as either successful or not. So what’s it going to be?
