1 Measurement What fun!

2 Why Measure

3 Two Main Systems of Measurement Used
International System of Units- (SI) Metrics (units of 10) Meter, Gram, Kilogram, liter US Customary or Standard System Inch, mile, yard, foot, pound, gallon, pint

4 METRIC SYSTEM (SI) Based on units of 10
Each unit is 10X bigger or smaller than the next unit. Uses meter, gram, liter. Prefix - precedes a basic unit of measure to indicate a multiple or fraction of the unit.

5 Prefix (before base unit)
King – (Kilo) Means Thousand or 1000X Henry- (Hecto) hundred or 100X Doesn’t (Deca) ten or 10X Usually Means base unit or 1X Drink (Deci) Tenth or 0.1X or 1/10 Chocolate (centi)hundredth or 0.01 or 1/100 Milk (milli) Thousandth or or 1/1000

6 LENGTH

7 Length The measurement or extent of something from end to end
Base Unit Meter

8 Conversion Stand up and Measure the height (length) of your table buddy in meters – record in your notes Convert to kilometers What was the multiplier? Convert to centimeters?

9 Weight the amount or quantity of heaviness or mass Base Unit Grams
What is your weight in Kg? Convert pounds to Kg (lbs / 2.2) Convert to grams Convert to milligrams

10 Volume Units of volume include: The amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. Capacity. Base Unit Liter or Metric: cubic centimeters (cm3), cubic meters (m3),

11 CONVERT A graduated cylinder has 1 Liter of liquid.
How much liquid in milliliters? 1000 mL How much liquid in kiloliters? kl How much liquid in pints? 2.11 pints (2.11 pints in 1 liter or liters in each pint) Complete these problems and show your work! Now show all these measurements of equal

12 Volume of a cube The height of a a cube is 0.5 meters, the length is 2 meter, and the width is 1 meter. What is the capacity or volume of the cube? Make sure the units are correct. What is this capacity or volume in mL (1 cubic meter (m3) = 1000 mL

13 Use Ladder Method

14 Know This 1000 mL = 1 liter (they are the same)
100 cL = 1 liter (they are the same) 10 dl = 1 liter (they are the same) Fill in the answers below 1 gram = mg (they are the same) 1 meter = cm (they are the same) 1 kilometer is meters (same)
