2 What is peer pressure? It is the influence exerted by a peer group on an individual. Pressure from one’s peers to behave in a manner similar or acceptable to them

3 WHO IS YOUR PEER? someone who you would think is an equal in age or ability a friend, someone in the community or even someone on TV

BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE ACCEPTED BY OUR PEERS

To do something that places a teen in danger or is hurtful to others is definitely cause for concern.

11 TEENAGE PEER PRESSURE Teenagers are the most vulnerable and the most affected. There are many changes taking place at the physical and psychological level. It becomes important for them to fit in.

SMOKING,DRINKING & DOING DRUGS PROMISCUITY IN RELATIONSHIPS

13 30% of teens are offered drugs in high school and middle school.
3.1 million American teens smoke. Of these, 25% of 17 and 18 year olds smoke daily. 9.5% teens have tried some form of cocaine in their lives 32.2% teens try their first drink before the age of 13. 25% of teens have been involved in at least one episode of binge drinking.

14 STOP PEER PRESSURE

15 SAY NO We must learn to say “NO" to those things that we don’t want to do or which is not right. Explaining to people in a calm way why we don't want to be part of something is one way of handling it.

16 Take Action Sometimes we are able to tackle peer pressure because we feel more comfortable in our environment. Standing up for someone may help us exercise our beliefs or rights

17 Develop Positive Self-Esteem
An individual who is confident about himself, can stand his ground, and would be able to say no to his peers if he is forced to indulge in something that he is not interested in.

18 DON’T LOSE YOUR INDIVIDUALITY

19 Make real friends Surround yourself with people who have similar interests and who understand you. You will feel a sense of security and confidence, which prevents you from falling into bad company. When people with common concerns come together, they act as a support system for each other.

20 Talk to Your Parents Sharing your thoughts and emotions with your parents can help you in getting rid of the emotional baggage. Parents can play an important role in ensuring that their wards are able to cope up with peer pressure.
