Vary sentence lengths The apple never falls far from the tree. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a perfect example for this metaphor. Throughout the novel Harper Lee demonstrates how a child is always influenced by their parent

Watch the run-ons! This quote shows how Atticus knows the consequences and impact not defending Tom Robinson would do, he want’s to show Scout and Jem that he isn’t gonna turn down a case just because Tom Robinson is black and would make people think badly of him.

What does the quote “show”? (Should support tS)
Throughout the novel Atticus Finch is constantly instilling the quality of courage in his children. For example, in chapter 11 after Jem finished his work with Mrs. Dubose, Atticus explains why he had Jem work with her and says, “ ‘I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what’ ” (Lee 149). This portrays Atticus’ profound devotion to teaching his children the quality of courage. This also emphasizes Atticus’ belief that courage is a part of everyday life, and not exclusive to a battlefield.

Avoid 1st & 2nd person POV I believe that after raising Jem, he now knows how to comfort Scout and convince her that going to school is a good thing. (1st person) Atticus’s belief that most people are good when you get to know them teaches his children a general openness towards people. (2nd person)
