4. In the late 1800s, calls for reform- the correction of abuses or errors in society, grew louder in the United States. What kind of problems is society experiencing during this time period? (Turn and talk)

5. The reformers were called progressives, and they had several goals for fixing urban problems, improving government, and regulating business. Reformers claimed that government and big business were taking advantage of the American people rather than serving them.

The goal is to gain control of all the economic activity. For example, the more railroads or property a player owns, the more money that player makes. Over the course of the next few lessons, keep track of corrupt or dishonest practices in government, and the attempts to end these practices and control monopolies in business through reform.
