How might your life be different if some of the technology, architecture, and educational changes had not been created? State at least two examples to support your answer

4 In the late 1800s, calls for reform- the correction of abuses or errors in society, grew louder in the United States. What kind of problems is society experiencing during this time period? (Turn and talk)

5 The reformers were called progressives, and they had several goals for fixing urban problems, improving government, and regulating business. Reformers claimed that government and big business were taking advantage of the American people rather than serving them.

7 The goal is to gain control of all the economic activity
The goal is to gain control of all the economic activity. For example, the more railroads or property a player owns, the more money that player makes. Over the course of the next few lessons, keep track of corrupt or dishonest practices in government, and the attempts to end these practices and control monopolies in business through reform.

8 Guided Practice As a class, lets popcorn read a passage titled, “Fighting the Political Machines/Tackling the Spoils System” (Page 602) and have discussion about the types of corruption practiced by the political machine representatives of the late 1800s. 1. What is a metaphor? How is the term machine used metaphorically when referring to political machines? 2. What are bribes? State at least one example. 3. Based on the text, how did kickbacks work? 4. Describe the Pendleton Act

9 Independent Practice Read a passage titled, “Controlling Business” and answer the following comprehension questions: What did Congress attempt to control by passing the Sherman Antitrust Act? Why was this control important?

10 Group Work You will receive an info graphic titled, “Payment for Work Completed on New Courthouse” and answer the following comprehension questions in groups. Group 1- Which was the most costly job shown? Group 2-How can you tell that the payments listed in the chart are overpayments? Group 3-Why do you think the public would be concerned about such overpayments? Group 4- Where did the money come from to overpay contractors to do government work?
