1 Warm Up In a 3-5 sentence paragraph, identify any terms, ideas, or information that you have been exposed to regarding Ancient Greece.

2 Reminders….. -This is the start of a new unit. Do you best to pay attention so you do not fall behind -Kickboard will be used to record individual behaviors, and phone calls will be made at the end of the week.

4 Objective- SWBAT understand the geography of Ancient Greece, and the time period that will be covered during this unit. Daily Vocabulary- Peninsula

5 Google Maps! Lets open up Google maps and search for Greece. Lets identify some different cities, and see the location of Greece compared to Egypt and the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia.

9 What can you tell about the geography of ancient Greece by looking at these maps?

10 Answer- Greece is a Peninsula; the mainland is surrounded by water on 3 sides. There are many small islands; it’s mountainous. How might the geography of ancient Greece have affected its people? (Turn and talk)

The coastline allowed for people to become sailors and traders. The mountains would make travel on land difficult.

12 As a class, lets answer the following questions about Greece;
-Is Greece located East or West of Asia Minor? -What influence would the Greek’s location on the Mediterranean Sea have on the way they earned a living and traveled? -What makes the area occupied by the ancient Greeks a crossroad between three continents?

13 Independent Practice Greece

14 Group Work Each group will be presented with a timeline- the timeline will highlight the major events that will happen in Greece throughout this unit- and will also highlight major events happening in the rest of the world. Each group will be assigned a question, and they must utilize the map to answer their question. Group 1-What was happening in Greece around the time that iron making skills were spreading in East Africa? Group 2-Who controlled Greece around 2000 B.C.? Group 3-What events in Greece point out that conflict was often a part of Ancient Greek life? Group 4-How many years passed between the year that Xerxes became king of Persia and the year he invaded Greece?

15 Closure You will be given the opportunity to ask questions based on the map, timeline or class discussion about ancient Greece. As a class we will answer student questions.

16 Homework Summarize todays lesson in a 5-7 sentence paragraph.
