4 Why is it important to discuss Bullying?
Safety- Why is safety a concern with incidents of bullying? Distraction from learning- How is bullying a distraction to learning? (i.e. Bully, bystander and victim)

5 Respect Showing respect for people means accepting their differences and treating them the way you’d like to be treated. Bullying is the exact opposite of respecting others.

7 Types of Bullying 4 Main Types
Physical Bullying-hitting, pushing, punching, and kicking Emotional Bullying-social isolation, intimidation, and using gestures Verbal Bullying-unwanted name calling, teasing, and taunting Cyber Bullying-sending hurtful or threatening texts, photos, s, or posting harmful comments others on social media

Give an example of what a one time incident might be Give an example of a bullying situation

10 Bullying: What Can You Do?
Let someone know what is happening Being bullied is not your fault It’s okay to ask for help Who???? Parents, Teachers, Advisor, Principal, Vice Principal

11 When to Report- what’s worth reporting
Incidents when you feel threatened witness someone else being threatened when you just know something is wrong Examples Physical actions Verbal threats Other students are in danger Student examples

85% of students have witnessed bullying What do these numbers say to you?

13 Put Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes
If you were being bullied… What would it be like coming to school everyday? How would you feel? About yourself? About others? What would you do?

14 Everyone Can Help Out Do The Right Thing!
Don’t join in and Refuse to watch Say something to stop it – can you give an example? Report Bullying to an adult Invite the person being bullied to join your group Be a friend to a person being bullied Distract the bully so that he or she stops

15 Bullying: How Not to be a Victim
1. Be CONFIDENT Bullies go after those who appear weak Bullies repeat actions to those who they think they can 2. Keep your reactions to a bully minimal The bully wants you to react. Their goal is to take away your power, make you sad or scared. They will often lose interest if they do not receive a reaction from you.

16 Bullying: How to Avoid Bad Situations
1. Stay in a group Surround yourself with people you feel safe with 2. Avoid “hot spots” Limit your interaction with the bully

17 Are You A Part of the Problem?
Do you ever Laugh when a classmate makes a mistake? Make fun of people in a mean way? Join in when someone is being teased? Gossip or Spread Rumors?

18 Strategies Discuss some strategies you can use in dealing with a bully. What can you do when you are dealing with: Physical bullying? Cyber bullying? Emotional bullying? Verbal bullying?

20 Discussion Questions How did your heart change when you wrote down the “hurts?” (i.e. I felt …) How hard is it to return your hearts to the original “clean” heart once you put a protective shield around your heart and hurts? How does it make you feel when you see a friend or classmate bullied? How can we change the culture of bullying in high school?
