1 Binder Tasks-Day 1 Monday, January 9, 2017

2 Assemble Your Binder Take your “Tabs” page and follow the directions
Place the pages in the following order: Questions Sticky Notes Journals Character Development Figurative Language Plot Development Citing Textual Evidence Vocabulary Projects

3 Set the Ground Rules Fill out the Membership List Grab a Calendar
Create a Reading Log—you will have 12 reading days, but you will also have binder activities! (See Calendar)

4 Set the Ground Rules Create the rules of your group. Consider the following: What is each member’s responsibility? When will you get your work done? Who is responsible if work is not completed? How can group members encourage and motivate each other? What are the consequences for coming unprepared?

5 Set the Ground Rules Sign and date the bottom of your sheet
File the sheets in this order at the front of your binder: Calendar Reading Log Signed Rules Member List

6 Personalize Your Binder
Personalize your binder! Create a cover sheet to put on the front of your binder. It should have the following: Book Title and Author Illustration Group Member Names Personalize the side of your binder if you wish— just make sure it is removable when you are done 

7 Journals Grab a stack of journal sheets—every member should have a different color Take out the Pre-Reading Journal Entry. Read the prompt and respond (4 mins) Exchange your entry with a group member. Read your peer’s entry, then provide a short, THOUGHTFUL response (2 mins) Repeat previous step (2 mins)

9 Journals Take out the Journal Entry #1. Read the prompt and respond (4 mins) Exchange your entry with a group member. Read your peer’s entry, then provide a short, THOUGHTFUL response (2 mins) Repeat previous step (2 mins)

10 Questions Grab a sheet protector with Orange questions
The group member who’s name is first alphabetically should draw a question. Read the question aloud Record your question and (summarized) responses on a blank sheet of paper. Please be sure to write the date on your paper, as well as each group member’s name by their response. The person who drew the question ALSO needs to respond.

11 Questions Grab a sheet protector with Pink questions
The same group member should draw a question Record your question and (summarized) responses on a blank sheet of paper. Please be sure to write the date on your paper, as well as each group member’s name by their response. The person who drew the question ALSO needs to respond.

12 Questions File these under the Questions tab in the following order:

14 Sticky Notes Follow the instructions at the top of your sheet to place your sticky notes on your page. You MUST have a matching Sticky Note for the squares marked with that symbol; the four blank are your choice of what to put there.

15 How do we positively deal with group members who come unprepared?
Unprepared Members Grab a scratch piece of paper to brainstorm on Please brainstorm the following question: How do we positively deal with group members who come unprepared? Create a new liability policy, and add it to your group rule sheet

16 Unprepared Members Now, you need to come up with two corollaries:
Will the liability policy change if the same member(s) repeatedly come unprepared? What is a non-distracting visual symbol that will show Miss Giesler that a student is a liability today?

17 Unprepared Members Suggestions
Listen but not talk Listen carefully and take notes Do not participate in the discussion but look for information Read passages that we are discussing aloud Apologize to the group and explain why they are a liability today Work as an observer, not a participant

18 Unprepared Members Suggestions
Be in charge of getting the binders, getting papers, etc Some sort of punishment—either lose points or something else Listen silently and ask questions when discussions/tasks are completed Contribute on parts that they read or know about

19 Unprepared Members Add these stipulations to your Group Rules list
Make sure to sign and date them

Follow the directions on the orange sheet Cut out the square on the SOLID line. Fold on the DOTTED line Glue to the white base page Follow instructions on each piece File under “Figurative Language”

Label the 5 plot elements on the white sheet Write the definitions of the plot elements on the arrows Cut out the arrows from the yellow sheet Glue the arrows to the base sheet so that they are pointing to the appropriate plot element File under “Plot Development”

30 Making Inferences The white sheet is your “base” paper
Fill out the two boxes on the pink paper Cut out the bottom two pink boxes Glue them on to the base paper File under “Citing Textual Evidence”

31 Binder Tasks-Day 5 Friday, January 13, 2017

32 Sticky Notes Follow the instructions at the top of your sheet to place your sticky notes on your page. You may glue your sticky notes in if you wish

33 Vocabulary The white sheet is your “base” paper.
Pick a vocabulary word from your reading Follow the directions under the orange tabs See the handout for denotative v connotative meaning File under “Vocabulary”

34 Protagonist v Antagonist
The white sheet is your “base” paper Follow the directions on the green sheet Assemble on the base sheet File under “Character Development”

35 Personification The white sheet is your “base” paper
Follow the directions on the blue sheet Assemble on the base sheet File under “Figurative Language”

36 Reflection Fill out the white Reflection sheet—be honest
Miss Giesler will come around and conference with you and your group to check your group’s progress

37 Read With the remaining time, begin reading your novel ENJOY! 
