Welcome to 5A! Hello, and welcome to 5A! My name is Deb Larson and I will be your child’s teacher this year! Tonight we will cover the basics regarding what to expect as far as rule and procedures this year! Please feel free to me. I check my s in the morning and before I leave for the night. I will try my best to answer your s on the day you send them. Mrs. Deb Larson

4 For Your Information Check weekly for forms, documents, and Principal’s Pen. Parent Handbook is provided online for school policies and procedures. e.g. Attendance, Dress Code, etc. Homework will be posted daily on my teacher webpage: Some additional information for you… The school sends out a weekly . Please look for it and review it, as it is intended to keep you and our students up to date with what’s happening in school. Also, our Parent Handbook is available on the school’s website. Please review it, since it contains important information about things like attendance, dress codes, absences, and so on. Homework assignments are also posted online, on my teacher web page. PAUSE NOW….. You’re seguewaying into “CCS”!

Use of Archdiocesan Guidelines and Common Core Standards Children are expected to learn, using: Innovative skills Technology skills Classroom participation As part of the CCS, our children are expected to be innovative, technologically-skilled, and active participants in the learning process.

Innovative skills: Critical thinking and problem solving Communication and collaboration Creativity and innovation STREAM LAB These innovative skills are very important in today’s world.

Subject Areas: Religion Math Science ELA/Reading Social Studies Special Subject Areas Our subject areas include the ones listed. They’re traditional subjects, but we will use a variety of media to explore them. PAUSE NOW!!! You’re moving on to discussing the “Specials”!

Thursday – Music Friday – Technology Science Lab STREAM Lab Here are the special classes for our class this year. This is also posted on my teacher web page.

9 Fifth Grade Curriculum
We’ve covered the basics… but what will your students be learning this year? What do we learn in fifth grade?

10 Religion WE BELIEVE book Main Focus: Sacraments Liturgical Year Saints
Website: In Religion, we focus on….. We also believe in putting our faith in action. We do service projects and activities to reach out to the community. (e.g. N.P. Adult Day Care, etc.)

11 Math Go Math! Skills include: Place Value Estimation
Addition/Subtraction Decimals Long Multiplication/Division Graphing Measurement Fractions Problem Solving On to Math….. These are the basic skills we will cover in Math this year.

12 ELA/Reading Listening and Speaking skills Spelling / Vocabulary
Reading comprehension Language Mechanics Written expression Now, on to ELA (English Language Arts) and Reading! Reading is integrated throughout all areas of the curriculum. In 5th grade, students are expected to be learning and using a more sophisticated vocabulary. Creative Writing Activities (Mom – elaborate on this!) Grammar – Correct usage is expected in fifth grade. Spelling is an important skill to practice in every subject area. Students are also expected to write complete sentence answers in all subject areas.

13 Social Studies Taught by Mrs. Martin
Basic geography and cultures of the Western Hemisphere, including: United States Canada Mexico Central America South America The Caribbean I will be teaching Social Studies to both 5A and 5B. We’re covering …..(elaborate on this). NOW PAUSE….. You’re moving on to homework, discipline, etc.

15 Homework Archdiocesan Guidelines: Grades 5-8: 90 minutes per night
Parents – Check/review homework Homework is your child’s responsibility! We’ve covered the curriculum. Now for everyone’s favorite topic… HOMEWORK!!! Homework isn’t meant to be a frustrating experience. It’s meant to reinforce and practice what’s being covered during the school day. If your child is experiencing difficulty with homework, please me.
