2 Overview A1-A2 In this lesson you will learn the names of some things in your classroom, write a profile of your teacher and explore types of errors students often make. You’ll work on these areas of language. Pronunciation-word stress in compound nouns Lexis-personal information Constructions-SVO statements Sentence grammar- wh- questions (present tense markings) Discourse-linking words -and, but, also Functions-find out personal details Speaking-ask and answer questions Listening-listen for specific details Reading-use notes as an aid to speaking Writing-taking useful notes You’ll focus on these skills today. After completing this lesson, you should be able to:

3 Objectives Ask for personal information and make notes of the answers people give you. Write a personal profile using your notes. Identify types of errors you can make in your writing. Understand the symbols in a correction code your teacher will use for your written work.

4 Language Review Some students were making a poster with useful language for display in their classroom. Unfortunately, the two halves of the items for the poster got mixed up. Work with a partner. Put them back in the right order. Divide the class into larger groups. Choose a ‘leader’ for each group. The other students in the group make bingo grids. Use numbers between 80 and 100. How do you say Japanese, please? How do you write that on the board? How do you pronounce I’m late? Could you understand. Can I have ‘bom dia’ in English? I’m sorry you spell that? Ask and answer it. Can you write the questions? Don’t speak a pen, please? Sorry, I don’t repeat that, please? Example 93 87 85 90 83 98 Write 5 words that you think your classmates will not know. Say the words. Ask questions about the words you hear. Leaders call the numbers at random. Mark the numbers on your grid you hear.

Before you start Things in the classroom Check your spelling. Work with a partner. Write the names of these things. Practice saying the items. Look around the classroom and add more words to your lists. Compare your words with your partner. an eraser a desk a trash can a pen a chair a handout a notebook a cell phone a whiteboard a pencil case Match each instruction to one of the objects 1-10. Sorry... How do you spell ‘whiteboard’? Sit down, please. Use colored pencils. Write this down. Erase it. Please dispose of that. Write it on the board. Put it in your bag. Read this, please. Make a note. Sit in groups, please. An eraser goes with erase it…that’s an easy one… I think! Listen to your teacher say the names of the objects. Interrupt if you’re not sure of how to spell the names of the objects. Yes, I’m sure it’s right…a desk…mmm? Check as a class.

Language in context More things in the classroom! What’s probably the most important thing in your classroom? What can you remember? Work in the same groups. Write notes. Check your information. Write a profile of your teacher. What else do you like doing? In my free time… when I have any… I Iike reading a lot. Show your teacher your profiles. Interview your teacher.

7 Writing A personal profile Write a profile of your partner.
Use the profile of a teacher to help you. Work with a partner. Interview each other. Take notes. Zifan Yang, 15 from Shenzen, China mountains-loves technology-likes Give your teacher your profiles. My partner, her name is Zifan Yang. She’s Chinese. She come from the Shenzan in the China, where she live there with her mother and father. She has fifteen and an only child. Her father’s name, it is Chaoxiang and her mother she is Ju. They both teechers at scool in city centre. She like very much play computer game and the shopping too. But she love mountain also. She don’t like TV. Her favorite color is green. Green is color of mountain. She want to be IT engineer in the future. Use these questions to help you. What’s your full name? Ask more questions if you can. Where are you from? Where do you live? Examples Who do you live with? What are their names? What do your parents do? What do you like doing in your free time? What else do you like doing? Work as a class. Find as many errors as you can in the profile. What about something you don’t like? What’s your favorite color? Why do you like it? What about the future?

8 Learning from your errors Make sure you keep them in a useful place.
Writing Correction Code Sentences 1-10 each have one error in them. Work in teams. Find the errors. Write the sentences again. ABOUT LANGUAGE Learning from your errors Everyone makes errors! Your errors are an essential part of your learning. For example, this sentence has three types of error which are useful for the student to know. She come from the Shenzan. The first is a grammar error. ‘She’ means the verb ‘come’ needs an ‘s’. The second is also a grammar error, but this time of a different type. ‘Shenzan’ is the name of a city. These are not usually marked with an article. The third is a spelling error. Shenzhen is spelt with an ‘e’ not an ‘a’. It also has an ‘h’. I play bingo right now. He’s from the Hong Kong. I like very much football. He’s from china I am an English estudant. Her name Tanya. Is of the Russia my brother. She like the color blue. My teacher’s name’s James. Her school is on the city centre. You also checked your understanding of some classroom instructions. constructed some questions and used these to find out personal information. You wrote a profile of your teacher and one of a classmate. corrected your profiles and identified different types of errors. You were presented with a correction code your teacher will use to help you with your written work. HOMEWORK IDEAS Rewrite your profiles after you check for errors. Interview another person and write a profile of this person. Give your written work to your teacher. Use the symbols on your work and think about how you could change things. Keep an ongoing record of errors you often make.
