2 Lesson Objectives Define the eight different parts of speech.
Identify the eight different parts of speech in sentences and in writing. If you have questions throughout this presentation please use the raise hand tool, and type your question in the text box.

4 Pre-Assessment Cont. Read the following sentences and use the pointer tool to identify the correct part of speech. Several cats ran into Rob’s garage. (Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb) Bob asked her what time it was.(Adjective, Noun,Conjunction, Interjection) She got into the gigantic yellow bus. (Preposition, Noun, Adjective, Verb) He decided to go to Pizza Hut after school. (Pronoun, Adverb, Conjunction, Verb)

6 Introduction Using the poll toll, please answer “yes” or “no” if you can remember all 8 parts of speech. Every word in the English language belongs to one of just eight word groups or eight parts of speech. A few of these 8 parts of speech are easy to remember – nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs.  Others are a bit more difficult to identify, such as prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.  We will break down each of these 8 parts of speech in separate sections.

7 Nouns and Pronouns Nouns
Refer to a person, place, or thing. Examples: student, cellphone, building, Jack Pronouns Pronouns take the place of a noun. Examples: my, me, she, he, his, her.

8 Verbs and Adverbs Verbs
Action words. They show action or a state of being, as well as whether it took place in the past, present or future. Examples: They whooped and laughed as they hurtled down the ski slope. Adverbs Describe verbs, adjectives, as well as  other adverbs. They specify how, when, where, and how much something happens. Example: The children were sleeping next door.

9 Adjectives and Conjunctions
Describe or modify nouns. They say more about the noun, such as specifying size, appearance, quality, quantity, origin, etc. Example: This tiny, green and pink speckled tropical lizard is very rare. Conjunctions Join words, phrases, or clauses (and, but, or, nor). Example: Three of us went to the beach and the rest went cycling.

10 Prepositions and Interjections
Show how a noun or pronoun is related to another word in a sentence (into, behind, around, over). Example: The car stopped close to the elephant by the road. Interjections Exclamations.  They are often followed by an exclamation mark (oh, well, wow, cheers, hooray) Example: “Wow” “Phew” and“D’oh” ( as Homer Simpson says).

11 Video Please click on the following link to watch a video over the 8 parts of speech. Once you have finished watching the video please take turns using the audio tool to comment on what you learned from the video. The first person to use the audio tool will be the person whose first name comes first in the alphabet. We will continue taking turns alphabetically.

12 Practice Identify the part of speech in each sentence using the shapes tool to put a circle next to the correct answer. I bought a beautiful dress at the mall. (Pronoun, Adverb, Adjective) What did she ask you to do? (Noun, Pronoun, Interjection) I left my shoes under the kitchen table. (Conjunction, Verb, Preposition) We finished our work quickly. (Verb, Adverb, Noun)

13 Practice Continued On Saturday I work from 9am to 5pm. (Verb, Conjunction, Adverb) I want to go to college when I graduate. (Noun, Pronoun, Adjective) Well, I guess I will stay after school. (Conjunction, Preposition, Interjection) Jack and Jill went up the hill. (Preposition, Interjection, Conjunction)

15 Post Assessment Using the pencil tool, write which part of speech is used in each sentence. The choices are noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction, interjection, or preposition. 17 Extension Activity For homework tonight, create your own sentences using the 8 different parts of speech. Highlight each part of speech in the sentences, and write which part of speech it is next to the sentence. We will share our sentences with our classmates tomorrow during class.
