1 How and why do Christians worship?
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Worship What happens during the different forms of worship? Why is worship important? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of worship? How and why do Christians worship? The oneness of God and the trinity

2 What is worship? Worship is the way that Christians show their love to God. It’s an outward way of giving yourself to Him and showing dedication. It can come in many different forms…

3 What is worship? Holy Communion Singing Mass for Catholics
Christian Worship Sacraments Reading the Bible Church services Singing modern worship music Prayer

4 Informal Worship There are many different forms of Christian worship…
When watching this video, write down anything that you notice. What are they doing? Why do you think they are doing this? How might this help them connect with God?

5 Liturgical Worship Now have a look at this…
Write down anything you notice. What are they doing? How is it different to the last clip? How might this help them connect with God?

6 Individual Worship Christians believe that they can worship God in their own way. Catholics for example spend a lot of time praying the rosary with rosary beads. All Christians spend a lot of time reading and studying the Bible. Both can be seen as ways of respecting God. All Christians believe that they can worship God through their actions. Helping others and living out Jesus’ teachings can be seen as a form of worship.

7 Christian Worship Different Christians worship in different ways!
Some prefer liturgical where they follow the same structure and prayers every time, passing on traditions and making worship familiar. They feel the rituals and set prayers help and guide them to pray for the right things. People can receive God’s forgiveness through the priest. Others prefer to be more free and informal (non-liturgical), where they can say their own prayers. They believe this style helps the connect with God in a much more personal and individual way. They may share their own interpretations of the Bible. Many Christians will take part in private worship, which may involve meditation, prayer or Bible study.

8 Characteristics of worship and why this is important to Christians
Liturgical Non-liturgical The people receive God’s forgiveness through the action of the priest The style of worship follows that of some early Christians who met to hear about Jesus in the joy of the Spirit after Pentecost The people receive the living presence of Jesus in Holy Communion Faith is expressed in different ways e.g. Holy Communion Bible readings follow the Christian calendar and teach Christian history and faith across the Old and New Testament Christians can share personal interpretations of the Bible. Readings often follow the Christian calendar. There is a worldwide set order of service that is familiar to all, including visitors People can take an active part in church by praying aloud or speaking without formal training The ritual has been passed down through generations, giving a sense of tradition The service may have an emotional impact, with a feeling of personal revelation from God

10 Homework Find out what the rosary is, what is symbolises and how it is used in worship. 2. How do some Christians use meditation in worship?

11 How and why do Christians worship?
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Prayer How and why do people pray? What is the significance of the Lord’s Prayer? Why aren’t all prayers answered? How and why do Christians worship?

12 Why do Christians pray? To become closer to God To ask forgiveness
To feel peace and calmness To relieve stress and anger To get rid of fears and worries To ask for help or to simply talk Shows respect / love Thanks God Builds a connection with God

13 Prayer Christians believe that they can have a personal relationship with God. Jesus taught that Christians should get to know God as a Father, somebody who watches over them and guides them. You can’t get to know somebody unless you talk to them, so for Christians prayer is essential to get to know God!

14 How do they pray?

15 Christian Prayer Christians pray in many different ways. They might kneel as a sign of respect and submission, or they might open their arms to receive the Holy Spirit. Some pray quietly or in their heads, and others speak out loud or even in tongues. They might say their own prayers, or use prayers already written for them to help them. The most famous of these is… .

16 How and why do Christians worship?
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Prayer How and why do people pray? What is the significance of the Lord’s Prayer? Should God answer all prayers ? How and why do Christians worship?

17 Types of prayer Prayers may be set (formal) prayers or informal. Although praise is the basis of all prayer, prayers can include many different elements. Read the Lord’s Prayer and match each line with its meaning. Identify different types of prayer (from the hand of prayer) in the Lord’s prayer. Challenge: ‘God already knows are needs, so prayer is not needed.’ Thanks to God Pray for others Confession - sorry Pray for self Praise God The pointing forefinger is the opposite of the other fingers

18 How did you do? Praise God Thanks to God Pray for others Pray for self
Confession Our Father who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name - 1 Thy kingdom come - 1 Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread -3/4 And forgive us our trespasses - 5 As we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation – 3/4 But deliver us from evil – 3/4 For thine is the kingdom - 1 And the power and the glory - 1 For ever and ever. Our Father in heaven Help us to respect your name Be our king! Have your way on earth Like you do in heaven Give us today the things we need Forgive us for the things we do wrong As we forgive people who have hurt us Help us not to do wrong things And protect us from harm For everything is yours -all the power and glory in the world Now and for always.

19 The Lord’s Prayer often used at Holy Communion, baptisms, marriages and funerals
The Lord’s prayer is important because: It gives Christians a pattern for how to pray – praise and asking for what you need It reminds Christians praying privately that they must forgive others to be forgiven Prayer is only effective if the person’s relationship with others are right It reminds Christians that God is the Father of all Christians It brings a sense of unity to society and spiritual purpose at certain times e.g. commemoration of a tragic event

20 Choose one of the following 12 markers:
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Choose one of the following 12 markers: ‘Christians should always pray using set prayers.’ ‘Prayer is pointless.’ ‘A loving God would answer everyone’s prayers.’

21 ‘Christians should pray using set prayers.’
FOR AGAINST Sense of unity given to congregation Provides words for those who find praying aloud difficult Prayers become familiar Words may be irrelevant to needs/lives of individual/community No room for individual expression Knowing prayers off by heart may lead to them being repeated without feeling

22 God listens, cares, and answers where this is his will
‘Prayer is pointless.’ FOR AGAINST There is no God therefore prayer is a waste of time-nobody to listen or respond Millions of people pray and their prayers often (if not always) go unanswered Christians should be helping those who need help rather than praying to God who may not necessarily intervene God listens, cares, and answers where this is his will Even if there is no God, prayers provide a sense of comfort, someone to listen to problems Some prayers are answered, and God has reasons for not answering all prayers – some are not even worthy of being answered!

23 ‘A loving God would answer everyone’s prayers.’
FOR AGAINST People often pray to stop suffering If only some prayers are answered this shows God has favourites We are God’s children so he should give us what we want / need Unanswered prayers can lead to people feeling rejected Some prayers are selfish Some prayers do not fit in with God’s plan for the world God might be answering the prayer in an unexpected way God might want us to do things for ourselves Prayers which interfere with free will cannot be answered

Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End What is a sacrament? Using the pictures, write what you think a Sacrament might be…

25 Why are the sacraments so important?
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Sacraments: Baptism What are the sacraments? What happens at different baptism ceremonies? Why is baptism important for different Christians? Why are the sacraments so important?

26 Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Sacraments A Sacrament is a physical action that shows something huge that is happening spiritually. They show believers that they are receiving God’s love. The seven sacraments used by Orthodox and Catholic Christians are: Baptism Holy Communion Confirmation Confession Marriage Holy Orders Sacrament of the sick Has anybody experienced any of these before? What happened? Sacraments involve lots of symbolism. They strengthen Christians’ relationship with God and bring the Christian community together.

27 Today Christians want to follow Jesus’ example and be baptised to wash away their sins and receive the Holy Spirit.  Although different Christians denominations have different ideas how this should be done, it is very important to them all. What do you think baptism represented? 2. Why do you think Jesus was baptised?

28 Believers’ Baptism Infant Baptism
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Infant Baptism This is where a baby is baptised shortly after it is born. Parents choose to have their babies baptised as a way of welcoming the child into the Christian faith and Church. This removes original sin. Believers’ Baptism This is a way of a person showing that they have made their own decision to follow the Christian faith and become part of the Church once they are old enough to make a choice like that for themselves. new life / being cleansed of sin Washing away of sin Infant: receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help them become a good person; child will go to heaven; child is a member of the Christian community Believers’: understand the commitment; follows Jesus’s example; will have sinned Why does the person being baptised wear white? How and why is water used? What are the advantages of each type of baptism? Challenge: ‘People should wait until they are old enough before they are baptised.’

29 How did you do? Why does the person being baptised wear white?
Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End How did you do? Why does the person being baptised wear white? It symbolises a new life / being cleansed of sin 2. How and why is water used? Poured over baby’s head / person submerged; washing away of sin & follows Jesus’s baptism 3. What are the advantages of each type of baptism? a) Infant: receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help them become a good person; child will go to heaven; child is a member of the Christian community b) Believers’: understand the commitment; follows Jesus’s example; will have sinned

30 Engage Endeavour Explore Elaborate Evaluate End Explain two contrasting ways in which baptism is celebrated in Christianity. (4) Structure One way is… which means / which symbolises… Another way is… which means / which symbolises… Sample answer 1 One way baptism is celebrated is infant baptism. The baby is baptised by a priest who pours water over the baby’s head which symbolises being cleansed of Original Sin. Sample answer 2 Another way baptism is celebrated is by the baby’s parents godparents promising to bring the child up in the Christian faith. This means that they must take the child to church and teach it Christian teachings. How many marks would you give each answer? (1 mark for 1 brief idea, 2 marks for development) Can you improve either answer? Answer 1 2/4 One developed reason. Need to talk about believers’ baptism. Answer 2 Two developed reason but need to talk about a contrasting practice.

31 Holy Communion (also known as the Eucharist, meaning ‘thanksgiving’) is the sacrament that uses bread and wine to remember Jesus’s Last Supper with his disciples, his sacrifice on the cross and his resurrection. Bible passages are read, the congregation prays and bread and wine is blessed and eaten. During the ceremony Christians thank God for sending Jesus to die for their sins and enabling them to experience God’s love in heaven. Differences Catholic Christians, many of whom receive communion every week, believe that Jesus is actually present in the bread and wine (transubstantiation). In contrast, Anglican Christians receive the bread and wine as a reminder of how important Jesus’s death and resurrection were: the bread and wine are symbolic. Most Churches used wine as Jesus used it at the Last Supper. However, most Methodist churches use a non-alcoholic drink as they think drinking alcohol can cause problems so they don’t want to encourage people to drink. Impact and importance For many Christians, Holy Communion is a way to bring them closer to God and to other Christians: Catholics believe that they receive God’s grace (love). Celebrating this event with others can also help those who are going through a difficult time, as they reflect on Jesus’s suffering and the hope of resurrection. Furthermore, Holy Communion asks Christians to put God’s love into practice, for example by treating others equally. It is a reminder of those who do not have enough to eat: this idea encourages Christians to work for a fairer world. Many Churches will, for example, collect money during the service to help those in need. At the Last Supper Jesus took bread, gave thanks and said “Take this [bread], all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you.” Matthew 26:26

32 Explain two contrasting ways the Eucharist is celebrated. (4)
Most Churches drink wine as a reminder of Jesus’s blood because Jesus used it at the Last Supper. However, most Methodist churches use a non- alcoholic drink because they think drinking alcohol can cause problems so they don’t want to encourage people to drink. Develop your answer using: Which symbolises / which means for example / which means

33 Explain two ways in which the Eucharist is important in Christian worship. Refer to a Christian teaching in your answer. (5) One way in which the Eucharist is important is Christians eat bread and wine. Doing this reminds them of the sacrifice that Jesus made for them and gives them hope of being resurrected and going to heaven. The Bible tells that at the Last Supper, Jesus told the disciples to eat the bread and referred to his body that would be given up for them. Another way in which the Eucharist is important is that during the service Christians are asked to put God’s love into practice. Many Churches will, for example, collect money during the service to help those in need.
