FOR PARENTS, GUARDIANS, & FAMILY MEMBERS Loleta Elementary School

2 What is PBIS? A school-wide approach to creating a positive and safe climate in which students can learn and grow.

3 Who participates and where does it happen?
PBIS is used with all students and across all school environments, including the lunchroom and playground.

4 Why PBIS? When schools take a positive approach toward addressing discipline, school climate improves. Students spend more time in their classrooms rather than in the principal’s office, and teachers spend more time on instruction rather than on discipline.

5 About PBIS schools At a PBIS school, teachers, administrators, and family members work together to teach and support behavior expectations at school. All school personnel are responsible for knowing the behavior expectations and providing consistent positive feedback to students.

6 What does PBIS look like?
Organized system of disciplinary actions Clear school wide expectations with incentives and consequences Actual teaching of Positive Behavior Expectations Behavioral recognition system for kids doing the right thing

7 How does PBIS include your child?
Developing positive and effective student behavior is a group effort where students, teachers, support staff, administration and parents/families work collaboratively towards achieving this goal.

Students are taught how to be safe, respectful and responsible in the: •Classroom •Cafeteria •Hallways •Bathrooms •Computer Lab •Recess •Bus •Office

10 Parents/Guardians/Family
RULE/ EXPECTATION Teachers/Staff Students Parents/Guardians/Family Be Safe Be on time for safety duties (bus, parking lot, yard, etc). Maintain safety and security in the building and playgrounds. All adults wear ID badges. Turn off computers and lights, and secure classroom at the end of the day. Enforce school rules in a fair and consistent manner. Follow up on reports of inappropriate behavior from students. Keep hands, feet, and objects to self. Walk facing forward. Stay in designated areas where an adult can see you. Benches and chairs are for sitting only. Settle conflicts with kind words. Be aware of personal space. Tell an adult right away when there is a problem (Stop, Walk, Talk). Follow school emergency procedures. Follow all traffic and parking lot rules (reduced speed, do not abandon vehicles, park in legal areas and areas that do not block school traffic flow, stop for buses with red flashing lights). Agree on after school plans and notify appropriate school personnel. Give the school working phone numbers. Update phone numbers, if changed. Wear proper ID badge when visiting. Use adult only bathrooms. Respectful Use appropriate language. Build a relationship with parents and students. Speak to students, parents, and staff in a respectful manner with courtesy and respect. Model and maintain a climate of dignity. Listen to students. Create an inclusive classroom community. Follow school rules when on campus. Be kind to everyone: "Treat others how you would like to be treated." Be polite and have good manners. Include everyone. Use appropriate assembly etiquette. Have a positive attitude toward education. Be involved. Treat students and staff with courtesy and respect. Use appropriate etiquette at games, plays, assemblies, and music concerts. Model sportsmanship. Responsible Be prepared for class. Value student and staff time. Be available for students who need help. Be helpful to staff, parents and visitors. Cell phone on vibrate and use in appropriate places on campus. Communicate with parents and guardians positives and issues of concern throughout the school year. Provide students with meaningful and engaging curriculum. Consider the family and cultural factors that impact student learning. Model appropriate ways to manage academic and socio-emotional demands. Explain goals, expectations, and grading system to students and parents. Follow adult directions. Disagree on non-safety rules politely. Stand up for what you know is right. Take responsibility for you choices. Cell phone in backpack and off. Leave toys, gum, and other treats at home. Leave your space clean: ~put trash in trash can ~put your belongings away Cell phone in your backpack and off. Arrive to class on time. Do your classwork. Ask for help if needed. Be an upstander or ally. Report bullying or concerns to a teacher. Check your child’s backpack for materials including homework and need for signatures. Sign/return classroom or school forms/assignments/materials. Send your child to school with proper clothing, healthy and rested. Make appointments with your child’s teacher and communicate any concerns. Have your child keep their cell phone at home during school. Provide a quiet time at home for homework/reading. Attend: Parent/teacher conference. Back to school night. Notify school regarding absences.

11 Recognizing Positive Behaviors
Specific, verbal praise (“You did a good job being safe by walking in the hallway.”) “Caught You Being Good” tickets Classroom based rewards Special recognition and awards Special trips and outings

12 Bullying Prevention Teaching students what bullying is. Repeated acts of: Verbal Physical Social Cyber Teaching students to “Stop, Walk, and Talk” when they feel bullied. Teachers consistently responding to student’s by encouraging to tell the person to “Stop” and “Walk Away”

15 How parents, guardians, and family members can help?
Discuss school rules of being safe, responsible, and respectful with your child Review matrix with your child and sign Code of Conduct Communicate concerns to teacher and Mr. Sutter Report bullying concerns on school’s website. Remind your child to tell the person to “Stop”, Walk, and Talk to an adult Recognize positive behaviors your child displays at school with specific verbal praise, special time with family members, games, FroYo, etc. Ask questions and seek out help! We are here for your child and want their experience at school to be positive and inclusive.
