1 Mixtures, Compounds & Elements
Cut & Paste

2 What are Elements? What is an element?
Made up one type of atom. Which of these have elements in them? 4 2 1 3 5

3 What are Compounds? What is a compound?
Is created when 2 or more elements have chemically reacted and joined together Which of these have compounds in them? 4 2 1 3 5

4 Pure Element What is an example of a element?
Oxygen O2 Color both oxygen atoms the same color because they are the same element. Color the oxygen atoms ORANGE. Oxygen

5 Pure Compound What is an example of a compound?
Carbon Dioxide CO2 Color both oxygen atoms the same color ORANGE Color the carbon atom PURPLE, different from the oxygen because they are different atoms. Oxygen Carbon

6 Mixture of Element What is mixture?
The physical combination of 2 or more elements. What is an example of a mixture of elements? Oxygen O2 & Helium He Color both oxygen atoms ORANGE Color the Helium atom GREEN Oxygen Helium

7 Mixture of Compounds What would a mixture of compounds look like?
Two or more compounds physically combined. What is an example of a mixture of compounds? Alcohol C2H6O & Water H2O Color the oxygen atoms ORANGE (the same as your other oxygen atoms). Color the carbon atoms PURPLE (the same as your other carbon atoms). Color the hydrogen atoms RED. Oxygen Carbon Hydrogen

8 Mixture of Elements & Compounds
What do you think a mixture of elements & compounds will look like? Elements and compounds combined together physically. What is an example of a mixture of elements & compounds? Air O2 N2 H2O CO2 Color the oxygen atoms ORANGE (the same as your other oxygen atoms). Color the carbon atoms PURPLE (the same as your other carbon atoms). Color the hydrogen atoms RED (the same as your other hydrogen atoms). Color the nitrogen atoms all the same color BLUE. Oxygen Hydrogen Nitrogen Carbon

9 Cut & Paste Cut out each box of elements and/or compounds.
Place them in the diagram column beside the appropriate description. Compare your chart with a neighbor. * If you have any difference, discuss them and determine what is correct. After you are sure they are correct, glue them in place.
