The National 4 History Course develops a range of skills including the ability to apply a straightforward historical perspective and to comment on historical sources in a range of contexts.
Learners gain a straightforward knowledge and understanding of the factors contributing to, and the impact of, historical events. They also develop the skills of investigating historical events and forming views, and of explaining historical events and drawing straightforward conclusions.

5. Unit 1 Scotland: The era of the Great War, 1910–1928
Pupils will investigate:
Scots on the Western front
The impact of the war on the Home Front
The impact of the war on culture and politics
The impact of the war on industry and the economy.

8. Unit 2 Britain: Pupils need to pass
Outcome 1 The learner will:

1.1 Interpreting straightforward historical information
1.2 Presenting historical information in an organised manner
Outcome 2 The learner will:
2 Draw on and apply knowledge and understanding of British historical events and themes by:
2.1 Describing, with some accuracy, a British historical event or theme 2.2 Briefly explaining a British historical event or theme

9. Unit 3 European and World:
Pupils yet to choose what unit to study
Choices include:
Nazi Germany
The fall of the Tsar and the Russian revolutions
Civil Rights
The Cold War
Appeasement and the Road to War.

10. Unit 3 European and World: Pupils need to pass
Outcome 1 The learner will:
1 Comment on the factors contributing to historical developments by:
1.1 Interpreting straightforward information about a historical development
1.2 Drawing a straightforward conclusion on the factors which contributed to a historical development
Outcome 2 The learner will:
2 Draw on and apply knowledge and understanding of European and world historical events and themes by
2.1 Describing, with some accuracy, a European and world historical event or theme
2.2 Explaining a European and world historical event or theme

11. How Assessment can be done
Assessment evidence can be drawn from a variety of activities and presented in a variety of formats, including, for example:
presentations,
posters,
brief written responses to questions,
participation in group tasks.
All of the evidence does not need to be from the one activity, but can be assembled from a variety of tasks and assessments carried out during the duration of the Course. Evidence may be presented for individual Outcomes or gathered for the Unit, Units or Course as a whole by combining assessment holistically.

12. The Assignment
The History Added Value Unit assessment is an assignment.
Candidates have an open choice of topic or issue to research, provided it will enable them to meet the requirements of the Unit and that resources are likely to be available.
Candidates research their chosen topic or issue by applying historical skills and drawing on knowledge and understanding to collect evidence, organise information, and present their findings.
This is a controlled assessment and is marked internally by the class teacher.
