2 Presentation Outline Reporting Services Overview New SSRS Features
Deprecated SSRS Features Discontinued SSRS Features Upgrading to SSRS 2016 Supported SSRS Features by Edition

3 Reporting Services Overview
Reporting Services (SSRS) delivers enterprise, web-enabled reporting functionality Implemented as a Report Server, in one of two modes—Native and SharePoint—it can scale to support thousands of users SSRS 2016 is extended with a new capability to deliver mobile reports, and is enhanced with a new modern web portal To contrast classic RDL reports with the new mobile reports, SSRS reports are now referred to as either paginated or mobile

4 Reporting Services Overview
SQL Server 2016 Reporting Services Architecture ANALYZE & AUTHOR DELIVER SQL Server 2016 Reporting Services CONSUME MOBILE REPORTS SQL Server Mobile Report Publisher ONE SET OF MOBILE APPS iOS App Android App Windows Phone App SQL Server Reporting Services Native mode SharePoint integrated mode PAGINATED REPORTS SQL Server Report Builder Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools Mobile Reports now a component of SSRS Key points: Roadmap slide for SQL Server 2016 BI – SQL Server Reporting Services for paginated and mobile reporting. Talk track: Today, customers who have a qualifying SQL Server Enterprise Edition license and active Software Assurance can download Datazen Server ( and use it as long as they have active Software assurance. In SQL Server 2016 we provide a better integrated experience and enable both mobile and paginated reporting with SQL Server Reporting Services (native mode). Datazen is expected to be available as a component of SQL Server Reporting Services in SQL Server 2016 enabling IT organizations to create and manage paginated reports as well as mobile reports for customers who need a mobile reporting solution that is implemented on-premises. SQL Server Reporting Services Report Server can run in one of two deployment modes, native mode and SharePoint Mode. Mobile reports will only be supported in native mode. What changes are expected for paginated reports in SQL Server 2016? IT can use a modernized version of SQL Server Report Builder and Report Designer to create paginated reports and manage them in SQL Server Reporting Services. SQL Server 2016 Reporting Services (native mode) allows you to access paginated reports in a new web portal experience, export paginated reports to Word, Excel, PPT, PDF and pin report items to Power BI dashboards enabling business users to get access to relevant information in one singe place. Mobile reports are created in SQL Server Mobile Report Publisher (previously Datazen Publisher) based on data sources that are set up in SQL Server Reporting Services These mobile reports can be consumed from Power BI apps and on a new web portal, enabling business users to get access to mobile and paginated reports from one single place. SQL Server Reporting Services in integrated mode will continue to support SQL Server Reporting Services 2016 for paginated reports. 5 New SSRS Features The new SSRS features are grouped by category:
Delivery Analyze and Author Consume Mobile Reporting

6 New SSRS Features Delivery
Supports the current versions of Microsoft.NET Framework 4 This includes 4.0 and 4.5.1 If no version of .NET Framework 4.x is installed, SQL Server setup installs .NET 4.0 during the feature installation Render paginated reports as PowerPoint files Text boxes and images render as PowerPoint text boxes and images Data visualizations render as images The PowerPoint slide layout can be adjusted to suit, by moving and resizing individual objects

7 New SSRS Features Delivery [Continued]
Ability to deliver subscriptions by using a single file share account, reusable across multiple subscriptions Pin report items to Power BI dashboards Requires registering the Report Server with Power BI Can pin charts, gauge panels, maps and images, and configure how often the data is refreshed Dashboard tile refresh is achieved with subscriptions Supported by all SQL Server editions Support of SharePoint mode for SharePoint 2016

8 New SSRS Features Delivery [Continued]
Authenticated server access

9 New SSRS Features Analyze and Author Paginated report authoring:
Custom parameter pane, allowing design-time control over report parameter layout Two new chart types: Tree Map and Sunburst charts, which effectively visualize hierarchical data Report Builder Now has a new modern look and feel, with streamlined UI elements Supports High DPI (Dots Per Inch) scaling and devices

10 New SSRS Features Analyze and Author [Continued]
Updated data source support: Oracle Database 12c (uses ODP.NET) Oracle Essbase 11 SAP BW 7.5 Teradata 15 Personalized connection strings for Analysis Services: Enables data sources to pass current user name as custom data Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=Sales Analysis;CustomData={{ UserID }}

11 New SSRS Features Analyze and Author [Continued]
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Deliver visual cues that communicate the amount of progress made toward a goal Typically valuable for teams, managers, and businesses by enabling them to quickly evaluate the progress made toward measurable goals Developed in, and displayed by, the new SSRS web portal Supported by Enterprise edition, and Native mode only

12 New SSRS Features Analyze and Author: KPIs [Continued]
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Enable defining value, goal, status and trend metrics The value, goal and status metrics are single values—typically numeric, though text is also possible The trend metric is designed to use a time series (e.g. monthly values) Values can be sourced from shared datasets, or by manually entered values Datasets can be parameterized Datasets must use caching Cache plans should be used to schedule the refresh Can be configured to launch related content—either a mobile report, or a custom URL The status colors—by default—are green (1), amber (0), or red (-1), and these can be overridden by custom branding

13 New SSRS Features Consume
The web portal is a new HTML5 application that targets modern web standards and modern browsers Report Manager has been removed and the web portal is now the default used to browse/manage/consume the Report Server catalog Stores, manages and secures reports and related assets: Paginated reports Mobile reports Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Power BI Desktop files Excel workbooks

14 New SSRS Features Consume [Continued]
Supports custom branding, allowing the customization of logo, web portal colors and a mobile report theme

15 New SSRS Features Consume [Continued]
PDF replaces ActiveX for remote printing (plug-in free printing) New enhanced subscription management: Easily enable/disable Provide a description User can change the owner

16 New SSRS Features Mobile Reporting
Mobile reporting is enabled by the delivery of a new component Based on Microsoft’s acquisition of Datazen in 2015 Supported by Enterprise edition, and Native mode only It is designed to deliver reports with optimal experiences on mobile devices It achieves this with a responsive layout that adapts to very different screen sizes and orientations SQL Server Mobile Report Publisher is the single point for designing and publishing of mobile reports

17 New SSRS Features Mobile Reporting: Mobile Report Publisher
Use Mobile Report Publisher to: Connect to: The report server to access shared datasets Local Excel workbooks (data is cached in the report) Design a master layout consisting of navigators, gauges, charts, maps and data grids Define additional layouts customized for tablet or phone formats Publish reports to the report server for delivery to all devices Mobile Report Publisher is available from the Microsoft Download Center

18 New SSRS Features Mobile Reporting: Additional Capabilities
Work with simulated data Simulated data is automatically generated as required, and is not published with the report This enables a design-first, rather than a data-first, design approach Data caching By default, shared datasets deliver the latest data To improve performance, consider caching the shared datasets Parameters Mobile report values can be passed to parameterized datasets

19 New SSRS Features Mobile Reporting: Additional Capabilities [Continued] Custom branding The new web portal custom branding can also be used to define a single color palette for mobile report styling Mobile Report Publisher will make the custom color palette available once it has connected to the report server Custom maps Geographic maps can be defined by using ESRI shapefiles There needs to be a .shp and .dbf file, and together they cannot exceed 512KB

20 New SSRS Features Mobile Reporting: Additional Capabilities [Continued] Configure firewall access It is likely that the required firewall port is closed A network administrator must ensure TCP on port 443 is open on the report server Deliver with Power BI Users can use Power BI mobile apps to consume mobile reports The iOS Power BI mobile app requires basic authentication, and this must be configured, and HTTPS should be enabled

21 Deprecated SSRS Features
Not supported in the next major release of SQL Server: HTML4.0 renderer (use the HTML5 renderer) Deprecated features are those which are marked for removal in future releases <TODO: STILL NOT ANNOUNCED AS AT 10-MAY-2016>

22 Discontinued SSRS Features
The following features are discontinued: Uploading and managing report models with the web portal (can still be achieved with the SOAP API) Discontinued features are those which are no longer supported, and which is likely to have been removed in the SQL Server 2016 release <TODO: STILL NOT ANNOUNCED AS AT 10-MAY-2016>
