academic advising THE ROLE OF AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR Support students’ academic success including retention and graduation from Stony Brook Help students select a major, map out coursework, and review degree progress Help interpret academic policies: Recommend academic-related opportunities beyond the classroom Work with students who are in academic difficulty Connect students with campus resources and support services Listen, provide suggestions, and help students evaluate options Encourage open communication between students and their families ACADEMIC aDVISING

8 DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Stony Brook Curriculum (SBCs) Major
EARNING A DEGREE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Stony Brook Curriculum (SBCs) Major 39 upper division credits – 300-level and higher total credits depending upon major 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA 36 Stony Brook credits after reaching junior standing ACADEMIC ADVISING

9 ACADEMIC STANDING Reviewed at the end of fall and spring semesters
Good Academic Standing: 2.0 minimum GPA requirement = C average Dean’s List: 3.1 – 3.4 semester GPA based on class year 12 graded and earned credits ACADEMIC aDVISING

10 HOW DO CLASSES WORK AT STONY BROOK?
Structure of classes HOW DO CLASSES WORK AT STONY BROOK? Classes offered Monday-Friday, 8 a.m p.m. (Friday ends at 4 p.m.) Most classes scheduled: M/W, TU/TH, or M/W/F 53 or 80 minute class periods Campus Lifetime: Wednesdays, 1-2:20 p.m. Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring course options Most classes are 3-4 credits Part-time = 1-11 credits; Full-time = 12+ credits Final exam schedule (under “Enrollment and Schedules” link): ACADEMIC aDVISING

Important ACADEMIC dates ACADEMIC CALENDAR Full calendar (under “Calendars” link): First day of fall classes: August 29 Last day to add/drop classes: September 13 G/P/NC and course Withdrawal deadline: October 28 Registration for Winter session & Spring classes: November 7 Thanksgiving break: November 23-27 Last day of classes and semester withdrawal deadline: December 9 Finals: December: December 13-21 ACADEMIC ADVISING

14 TAP SOME IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY REQUIRMENTS FOR STUDENTS RECEIVING NEW YORK STATE TUITION ASSISTANCE (TAP) AND SCHOLARSHIPS Be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen; Be a legal resident of New York State for at least one year prior to the start of the term; Enroll in an approved program of study in a New York State postsecondary institution; Be matriculated in an approved program of study; Declare a major by their junior year (57 credits or higher);General and Area of Interest are NOT valid majors; Be in good academic standing; Enroll in a minimum of 12 credits that are ALL applicable to the degree, (1st declared major only) SBC, DEC or skill requirements. Courses that are for minors or specializations may ONLY be counted if the primary major requires completion of a minor or specialization or you have elective credit room.  Students must earn a letter grade in these courses; students should not G/P/NC or withdraw from a course that is considered to be a part of these 12 credits; it may negatively impact the next semester’s award Graduated from a New York High School, GED Diploma is acceptable, or take and pass an Ability to Benefit Exam;   Recipients are responsible for knowing and understanding these and ALL eligibility requirements.
