Numeracy Passports

2 What are Numeracy Passports?
A way of putting mental maths at the heart of maths teaching and learning. Competitive and enjoyable way of promoting children’s understanding of their mathematical learning. Children progress through basic number skills which are linked to particular continents. Once one continent is completed, the child’s progress is celebrated and they travel to the next continent to work on targets with greater challenge. Children are competing against themselves and their learning and understanding, not against other children. The challenge for each child is to constantly improve and become faster at mental maths.

3 Why have Numeracy Passports?
In maths, the important part is to be able to use the basic skills – such as number bonds, multiplication tables, halving, doubling -- in problem solving and real life applications. If you want to know what is the best value in the supermarket, you need to be able to work out the price per 100g of a product when it comes in different sizes. Or you want to buy 4 plane tickets at £160 each. Do we really want our children to have to get out a calculator or use paper and pencil for a simple calculation? How would you work this out?

4 What is the cost of 4 plane tickets at £160 each?
Method 1 Use times tables 4 x 100 = x 6 = 24 so 4 x 60 is 240 = £640. Method Use doubling Double 16 is 32, double 32 is 64. So double 160 is 320, double 320 is £640. It doesn’t matter which way you work it out, as long as you know what to do and can work it out quickly.

5 Passports are based on the continents of the world.
There are currently 8 passports – we have added outer space for those children who have progressed through all the primary National Curriculum targets. Europe Asia Africa Australasia North America South America Globetrotter Outer space

9 An example of quick fire activities:
Addition Complete number or bonds – the number + ? = 10 This can be repeated with two cards making 100. The cards added together. (this can be used for two cards) Subtraction The higher card subtract the Multiplication stick with one table and multiply by playing card turned over Use two cards – multiply the one by the other.

10 Number Plate Ideas Add the digits together, put the digits in order, what are the missing numbers of you were counting? What is half of the number? Look at two number plates – say the number on each – which one is smaller / larger? How much is the difference? Multiply the digits together.

11 Mental Maths (passport) Activities
Mental maths is practised through games and practical activities. Children start by using apparatus (such as cubes or bead strings) to work out answers, but begin to rely on their own memory as number facts are learnt and embedded. Loop Cards Bingo ! Children each have a card similar to a domino, with an answer on one half and a question on the other. Starting with one child, the question is read and all children calculate the answer. The child who has the matching answer then reads their question out, and the game continues until the last child has the question which matches the first child’s answer, making a loop Children begin with a set of answers on their Bingo board. Questions are called out which children calculate the answers to Children circle the answers and call Bingo! when all answers on their board have been circled.

12 Number lines and hundred squares can be used to practise counting forwards and backwards in multiples of 1, 2, 5 and 10.

13 Playing cards can be used for the recall of all times tables.
They can also be used to double any number up to 12 or for number bonds to 10/20.

15 Times tables ideas Chanting Writing out tables
Beat the clock – how many can you complete in a given time Playing cards - -Turning over a card and answer the appropriate multiplication. Dice – Using a variety of dice (6 sided to 20 sided) to role and multiply the digits together. Tables splat Written tables and answers. Putting calculation 6 x 3 and finding answer as quickly as possible.

16 Closest to 100 – Role a dice 6 times, using the four processes and 6 numbers to get closest to 100.
What’s the factor? – Pick 2 cards to create a 2 digit number and as quick as possible write down that numbers factors. Find the difference – Pick 2 sets of 3 or 4 cards to create a 3/4 digit number and find the difference between the two. (this can be done with dice) Quick fire tables – Using the table you find the hardest and a pack of cards quickly go through each of cards and multiply it by your times table of choice. (Jacks= 11, Queens = 12, Kings = square it) Maths apps – Wipeout & Math Bingo
