1 New Reception Parents Information Evening 2017

2 Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
The Curriculum is divided into 7 Areas of Learning. Prime areas are “Personal and Social”, “Physical” and “Communication and Language”. Much of the learning is achieved through child initiated learning and adult led activities. The learning will be achieved through topics based upon the interests of the children. A careful record is kept of children’s progress across these 7 areas. Each child will have a learning journey where their learning and development is monitored throughout the year. This is continued throughout the child’s time in Reception and once they enter Year 1 will start on a different curriculum.

3 Phonics Continuation of the sounds learnt at Nursery with jingles, actions, flash cards and games. There will be a daily phonics session and adult focused activities to reinforce whole class teaching to then hopefully seeing the children apply this in their play. The children will be sent home phonic activities as part of their homework tasks. Before the children learn to spell they will make phonetically plausible attempts. High Frequency words.

4 Reading Start on individual books (with no words) to sharing in groups. When appropriate, children will move on to Oxford Reading Tree (O.R.T) books to read at home together with word cards. Home readers. Reading every night is important to building vocabulary and to reinforce phonic knowledge. Please record progress in their reading diary. It would be ideal to cover and strengthen the diary to prolong its life.

5 Writing and handwriting
Emergent writing to communicate their ideas. 1. emergent writing 2. Initial sounds 3. other sounds 4. complete words 5. Whole sentences The children will be provided with different purposes and contexts in order to write. We teach our children to write in a cursive style which encourages them to develop neat, handwriting as well as helping their spelling. No capital letters in words, only for practicing the first letter in their name.

6 What the children need throughout the week:
To come to school and go home daily: Bookbag Water bottle- no screw tops please separate to the bookbag. Packed Lunch (if having one) To stay in school all week: PE kit- will be sent home every week to wash To stay in school all year: Wellington boots Spare clothes All items of clothing must be clearly named.

7 Bookbags Please check bookbags daily as important information will be in there. Your child’s bookbag will also contain their reading book and reading diary. Homework will also be placed in bookbags. It would be useful to encourage your child to be as independent as possible by them carrying their own belongings. Big rucksacks are not necessary!

8 Hot Lunches Need to be ordered online via Dolce with the child.
There are plenty of staff on hand to support the children. Packed lunches. No nuts and sesame seeds. Touch screen with name. Encouraged to eat. Children to pack away when finished.

9 Drop off and collection
Drop off is at 8:50am on the playground. A whistle will be blown which indicates the start of the school day. The children will be led round to the classroom by the school staff so all goodbyes will need to be said on the main playground. This will allow the children to become far more independent in getting ready for school. Collection is at 3:15pm from around the back of the reception classroom. Please note the gates in to school will not be opened until this time. Whilst I am happy to talk to parents the morning is not the best time as my main priority is getting the children in to school safely.
