3 Transition Your children have now moved on from the EYFS (Nursery and Reception) and are entering Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2). This is the second stage of primary education. We try to incorporate as many practical activities as possible to aid the children’s transition into Key Stage 1. 5 Year 1 Expectations Children will be expected to be more independent in Year 1 and will need to organise themselves and their belongings with less help. Children are responsible for making sure messages get to staff and that their homework and their library book is handed in. Teachers and LSAs will not be able to go through each child’s book-bag every day. Please send in urgent messages separately, via the office. 6 A few reminders … Please make sure all of your child’s uniform, PE kit and bags are clearly labelled throughout the year. 7 Organisation Children will have phonics sessions 4 days a week. They have been grouped according to their individual ability to apply their phonic knowledge independently. 9 Handwriting We are teaching cursive handwriting. We are teaching cursive handwriting. Relevant sheets will come home each week for your child to practise. 10 How can you help? Listen to your child read daily, asking comprehension questions to check their understanding of the text. Reading supports many areas of the curriculum and is an essential skill in order to make progress in writing as well as other subjects.
