UNIT: Maths and Sciences Objectives: -to gain or improve children’s knowledge skills and competencies in maths and sciences ;

Science -includes both mathematical approach through practical experience and understanding of nature, as modified by human beings who are in interaction.

Mathematics activities: -development of pre-mathematic intellectual operations; -development of the capacity to understand and use numbers; -development of the capacity to: - recognize, -name, -construct and - use geometrical forms;

-development of the capacity to use correctly the measurements units,using an adequate vocabulary; -development of the capacity to solve simple arithmetic problems through the acquisition of adequate strategies;

Children learn basic skills in maths by handling different material (e.g. peas, pebbles, sticks, etc.) -mathematical games with materials;

Recognize, name,construct and use geometrical forms;

Tangram square or Columbus egg

Measurements

Knowledge of the environment: -development of the capacity to know and understand the environment -stimulation of the investigative curiosity; -use of an adequate language when presenting natural phenomena; -development and exercise of basic skills for the protection of the environment and - education of a positive attitude towards protection of the environment;

“ Scientific research” : -observation, - observing -creatures, -plants, -animals, -objects in the immediate environment -simple experiments, -comparing the properties of different materials.

Freezing-defrosting water

WE NEED: 1 balloon (round ones will work, but the longer "airship" balloons work best) 1 long piece of kite string (about 10-15 feet long) 1 plastic straw tape 1.Tie one end of the string to a chair, door knob, or other support. 2.Put the other end of the string through the straw. 3.Pull the string tight and tie it to another support in the room. 4.Blow up the balloon (but don't tie it.) Pinch the end of the balloon and tape 5.the balloon to the straw as shown above. You're ready for launch. 6.Let go and watch the rocket fly! WHAT TO DO: So how does it work? It's all about the air...and thrust. As the air rushes out of the balloon, it creates a forward motion called THRUST. Thrust is a pushing force created by energy. In the balloon experiment, our thrust comes from the energy of the balloon forcing the air out. Different sizes and shapes of balloon will create more or less thrust. In a real rocket, thrust is created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rockets engine - as the engines blast down, the rocket goes up HOW DOES IT WORK?

And children need to build a Lego car with air:

… And think… And construct…

AND PRESENT THEIR AIR-CAR

Mixtures water, red syrup, oil, vinegar, salt, sugar,food coloring

At the end of this activity we make our own volcano We use modeling paste to build a volcano, red and yellow food coloring (optional), Vinegar,Liquid dish washing soap

And this is our volcano:

Partnership "Little environmentalists" “ Save the polar bear” –effects of pollution and global warming-short movie presentation

-using alternative resources of energy-build wind mills from boxes, plastic glasses,recycled materials:

-exhibition of drawings on environmental issues

For teachers-training and workshop-Science education in School –october 2009
