1 Health Lesson Plan By: Amy Polston & Anthony Buford

2 INTASC Standard/Rationale Standard #4: Content Knowledge The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Description: We have created a lesson plan to promote physical activities, safety and preventing injury. We researched ways to accommodate everyone and to touch base with all these topics with in one subject. We reflected on the lesson plan and created practice for our future careers. Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #4: Content Knowledge, I selected to include my Health Education Lesson Plan because this assignment demonstrates by ability to add inquiry into my lesson plan and allow the student to direct their learning. Therefore, they are creating their own experiences to assure mastery in the content.

3 Standards 1.5.4. describe ways to prevent common childhood injuries and health problems Standard 7 Understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction. 5.7.1 Exhibit positive feelings about participation in physical activity. 5.7.2 Engage in the challenge of new activities. Example: Receptive to new games, sports, and rhythm activities. 5.7.3 Engage in and enjoys independent and interactive physical activity.

4 Promoting Physical Activity & Safety/Injury Title: Stay Fit For Fun Grade Level: 5 th Grade Duration: 2 days & 45 min each day

5 Objectives & Equipment BIG PICTURE: Promoting Physical Activities & Safety Getting Children involved in different activities by the diversity Informing students of safety & precautions Students should have an understanding of: 1.Different Activities All Around 2. Safety & Precautions 3.How To Prevent Injuries Location: Classroom & Playground 1.Mini Poster Board 2.Markers, Crayons, Color Pencils 3.Scissors, Glue Sticks 4.Any Decorative Equipment

6 Introductory Activity & Preparation Introduction: Ask the kids to silently think about their favorite physical activity. Pass out KWL Charts for Physical Activity What they KNOW about Physical Activity What they WANT to know about Physical Activity Give Students materials – While thinking about Activities Produce a poster of favorite physical activities Preparations: 1. Build my own Poster 2.Collect/ Buy Materials 3.Build A KWL Chart 4.Create a Personal Charts 1.Future Months

7 Personal Chart The Personal Chart: Physical Activities Classroom Chart.docxPhysical Activities Classroom Chart.docx For the “What I Want to KNOW” can be an extra credit opportunity for the students! Have them experience the idea of research & Share with class their results!

8 Lesson Activity Children Will Produce A Mini Poster & Share with Class Posters Will Contain: 1.Their Favorite Activity 2.Can Contain more than one activity 3.Must be Creative During Presentation of Sharing Must state: Their Favorite Activity Preparations they might take before activity Post-Activity Duties Children will do ongoing reflections of their activates month to month (can be extra credit or mandatory)

9 Assessment Activity I.What does Physical Education mean to you as an individual? II.What does Safety mean to you regarding to Physical Activity? III.How does Safety prevent Injuries during Physical Activities?

10 Closing Activity Take a vote about what activity the class would like to do as a class. The activity has to come from the activities that were presented in class from other students. Finally for Closing the lesson: Go participate in the Activity!

11 Accommodations Students who do not participate in Physical Activity: Have the Poster on activities they might enjoy to watch or know most about Same accommodations for those who do not interact much with the physical world For Personal Chart: How many Hours: Of Free Time (Not Including Electronic Time) Any Physical Activities They Are Limited To
