1 Martin Luther King Getting Ready to Read pp. 22-29

2 What do you know so far? Talk to the people at your table: Who were the Freedom Riders? Mostly black protesters. They rode buses and sad down in “WHITES ONLY” seats. What happened to the Freedom Riders? The KKK attacked them and hurt them very badly. How did college students protest in lunch bars? They sat in “WHITES ONLY” seats. King joined them and they were all arrested.

3 What do you know so far? Talk to the people at your table: Discuss MLK’s relationship with Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy Eisenhower refused to help King. Kennedy and his brother Robert tried to help him. Discuss the connection between the newspapers and MLK’s arrests King wanted to be in the newspapers because the world could learn about the problems in the South. When he was arrested, he was in the newspapers. That’s why he chose to stay in jail.
