Year 9 -Unit 2 Textile Landscapes

Think, Pair, Share 1) Think individually about the question 2) Pair with a partner and discuss the question 3)Share ideas with the rest of the class.

What would you expect to see in a Textile Landscape?

What materials and processes do you think have been used to create this?

Space How do you think artists and designers create the illusion of space within their work?

Overlapping Size of Objects Atmospheric Perspective Linear Perspective Texture Gradient Focus Spacing 7 Rules of Creating Space We are going to focus on using these methods to help us in our work

Atmospheric Perspective The closer an object is to you, the stronger the colour. The further away an object is, the greyer it appears.

Focus The further away the object is, the less detail is visible.

Texture Gradient Textures are more visible the closer they are to the spectator.

Atmospheric Perspective Texture Gradient Focus How is space created I this image?

Visual Research

1 Landscape Visual Research Think carefully about your class discussions about creating space in a landscape. Take your own primary photographs of local landscapes. Present on a double page in your sketch book. You should have at least 8 good quality different images, sized at 4 to a page. You must carefully consider how to successfully create space in an image. Camera, printer Print out a contact sheet of all of your images, only printing the best 8 (minimum) out large. TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

How is space created in these photographs?

Today you are going to complete a series of observational tonal drawings, exploring your visual research homework. How do you produce a successful tonal drawing?

Draw 4 equally sized boxes on a page in your in your book (or on a separate page of A4 paper if you cannot see you images while you draw the boxes ). Make sure you consider whether they should be ‘landscape’ or ‘portrait’……… 1)Start by planning out your drawing. Press really lightly with your pencil at this point. Plan out the position, size and basic shape first. 2)When you are happy with the position, size and basic shape you can start developing tone. 3)Make sure you develop a full tonal range, from the white of your page to the darkest mark your pencil will make

How do these need developing to become a successful tonal thumbnail?

Today we are going to look at the work of 5 contemporary designers who explore landscapes. You will need to choose one of these to study

Analysing art work To do this task successfully you need to really look at the piece of design work you have chosen to study. Make sure you have a colour copy in front of you! I have chosen to study the work of:...................................................................................... Initial Response: I have chosen to look at this design because:........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... This design reminds me of:.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I find this design interesting because:.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,........ Subject Matter: This is a design of:................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. How is the work arranged? ………………………………………………………………………………………………….......................................................................................................................................................... How are the background and foreground arranged? How does this create a sense of space?..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,................................................................................................................................................................. Colour: The colours in the design are:....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Does the artist use harmonious or complementary colours?.................................................................................................................................................................................................... Does the designer use atmospheric perspective?............................................................. Does colour very between the foreground and the background? Explain you answer........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,........ Now you are going to look at the Formal Elements of the design. You need to look very carefully at the way the artist has used these within the work. Remember they have chosen to create the design for a reason! Materials and Techniques: What materials have they used to create this artwork? Have they used different materials in different areas of the work? Explain you answer.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,.............................. What techniques do you think they have used to apply these materials? Explain you answer..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,........ Concluding Response: As I have studied the design I have been particularly impressed by.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I could use my understanding of this design to help me develop my work by:........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,........

2 Designer Visual Study Use a computer to find an example of textile landscape/ townscape by your chosen artist (the one you studied in class). Print the image and present it in your sketchbook. Complete a visual study of a section of the pattern in colour. The internet, printer, pencil, coloured crayons, paint etc Try to use the same materials and processes as your artist within your study (eg stitch, applique etc) TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

Think, Pair, Share 1) Think individually about the question 2) Pair with a partner and discuss the question 3)Share ideas with the rest of the class.

What makes for a successful Textile Landscape? What would you expect to see?

If you think back to your artists/ designers and what you have learnt so far about creating space, which formal elements do you need to most carefully consider? Composition- how can you successfully create space? Materials- what materials will you use where in your composition? Texture Gradient – where should you have the most developed textures? Techniques- how will you apply your materials to reference your artist/ designer? Today we are going to begin designing our own Textile Landscape. To do this, we need to carefully consider how we can use formal elements to make our work effective.

Top Tip: Make sure you consider if your thumbnails should be ‘landscape’ or ‘portrait’……… Artist Inspired Thumbnails How are these different from your previous thumbnails?

Annotating your Thumbnails

Remember, start at the back and work you way forwards. Why is this important?

What materials and processes have I used?

Make sure you remember to work from back to front

3 Material Resourcing Carefully consider how you can use materials (fabric, threads) to develop your final piece. Resources materials to use to in your final piece which you feel will enhance you work, and build connections between your work and that of your artist. Bring these materials to your next lesson. VariousFind additional items which you can add to your design as finishing touches (fabrics, beads, sequins, etc) TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

How can you use texture gradient to create space in your work?

4 Final Piece Reviewing and Refining Now you have started your final piece consider what area you feel least confident about completing. Complete a study of this area, using the same materials and techniques as you intend to use in your final piece. VariousComplete your study in A3. TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

Why is Self- Assessment Important?
